Sauerland Advent Market with Ice Rink and Historic Ferris Wheel
Looking for a Christmas market with a historic backdrop that isn't in a big city and isn't choked by mass tourism? Siegen delivers. From November 20 to December 23, 2026, the city center of this university town in Südwestfalen will transform into one of the most beautiful Advent market settings in North Rhine-Westphalia. At its heart: the Lower Castle, Siegen's historic town hall and baroque landmark of the 'Krönchenstadt' (Crown City).
The Christmas market is spread across several areas, each with its own character:
A total of over 70 stalls offering arts and crafts, regional specialties, and mulled wine variations.
Two attractions stand out from the classic Advent market offerings: the ice rink in the Fissmer-Anlage (approx. 400 square meters, skate rental available, affordable entry) and the historic Ferris wheel at Schlossplatz, offering views of Siegen's old town and the Krönchen — the distinctive church spire that gives Siegen its nickname.
A packed program runs on the central stage at Schlossplatz throughout the five weeks — choirs and bands from the region, school performances, bands, soloists, and Santa Claus himself. The detailed program will be published on weihnachtsmarkt-in-siegen.de and the city's websites.
The market is open Mon–Fri 4 PM–10 PM, Sat 11 AM–10 PM, Sun 11 AM–8 PM. Closed: November 22, 2026 (Totensonntag/Sunday of the Dead), December 24–26, 2026 (Christmas). The 'Winterzauber' at the Sparkasse continues — until January 10, 2027, as an extension with extended opening hours.
Siegen is an independent city in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district, Arnsberg administrative region, North Rhine-Westphalia, with around 100,000 inhabitants. As a university city with a dense student network, Siegen has a young, vibrant city center life. The city is located in the Südwestfalen mountain region, on the border with Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate. The Christmas market attracts visitors from the surrounding communities of Kreuztal, Netphen, Hilchenbach, as well as from Olpe and the Rhineland-Palatinate Westerwald.
The 2026 edition of the Christmas market at Siegen's Lower Castle starts on November 20 and runs until December 23. For over five weeks, thousands of visitors will flock daily to Kölner Straße, Schlossplatz, and Fissmer-Anlage. Over 70 market stalls will offer arts and crafts, regional specialties, and mulled wine variations, complemented by live entertainment on the central stage.
Two highlights set the Siegen market apart: the approximately 400-square-meter ice rink in the Fissmer-Anlage and the historic Ferris wheel at Schlossplatz with views of the Krönchen. The market will be closed on November 22 (Totensonntag) and from December 24 to 26 (Christmas). The Winterzauber at the Sparkasse extends the season until January 10, 2027.
By train to Siegen Hauptbahnhof (main station), then a 10-minute walk to the Lower Castle. By car via the A45 (exit Siegen-Süd). Parking garages at Kornmarkt and the ICE train station.
Admission to the Christmas market is free. Ice rink is subject to a fee (day ticket approx. €5–€7, skate rental extra). Ferris wheel is subject to a fee.
Visit on weekdays in the late afternoon for a more relaxed experience. Weekend evenings are crowded and atmospheric. Mulled wine mugs have a deposit — one can be kept as a souvenir.
