German wines against the backdrop of the Cathedral and St. Severus Church
Domplatz in Erfurt is considered one of the most beautiful city squares in Germany. In the background, the two towers of Erfurt Cathedral (with the famous Gloriosa bell) and St. Severus Church, and in front, 70 medieval sandstone steps — this backdrop makes every festival held here a special experience. The Erfurt Wine Festival has used this setting for over three decades for a summer wine presentation of Germany.
Unlike the regional wine festivals of the growing areas, the Erfurt Wine Festival presents itself nationwide: Winemakers from the 13 German wine-growing regions travel to Thuringia with their vintages — Mosel Riesling alongside Palatinate Sauvignon Blanc, Rheinhessen Burgundy alongside Württemberg Trollinger and Saale-Unstrut Müller-Thurgau. Wineries from Thuringia (Bad Sulza, Höhnstedt) are also represented.
Anyone who wants to try all the stalls can purchase the wine pass in advance from Erfurt Tourist Information: a wristband with coupons that can be exchanged for tasting glasses at the various stalls. An efficient method to compare several growing regions in one evening.
On Saturday and Sunday, an arts and crafts market takes place in parallel — jewellery, ceramics, glasswork, textiles, and paintings by artists from Thuringia and all over Central Germany. An ideal opportunity to get to know regional artists.
Bands perform on the main stage on all four days — acoustic acts, cover bands, jazz ensembles, and occasionally stars from the Schlager and pop scenes. The atmosphere in front of the Cathedral, with the sunset over the two towers, is part of the Erfurt summer. Those in the city centre on the weekend can combine the Cathedral Steps Festival (Domstufen-Festspiele), Krämerbrücke, and the Wine Festival for a multi-day cultural and enjoyment stay.
The 34th edition of the Erfurt Wine Festival is spread over four days with increasing duration of stay. On Thursday and Friday, the festival grounds open in the afternoon at 2:00 PM and remain open until 11:30 PM. On Saturday and Sunday, the programme starts at 11:00 AM — on Saturday until shortly before midnight (11:59 PM), and on Sunday until 8:00 PM.
