What is the Köpenicker Sommer?

The Köpenicker Sommer is the major annual old town festival of Berlin's Köpenick district in the Treptow-Köpenick borough. For over 60 years, the festival has taken over the historic old town around Alt Köpenick — one of Berlin's few surviving medieval streetscapes — every summer. The organizer is Hauptstadt Kultur. With over 200 exhibitors, 3 stages, amusement rides, and a historical parade, the Köpenicker Sommer is one of the capital's largest city festivals — and the quintessential Volksfest (popular festival) in Berlin's southeast.

The Historical Parade

The highlight of every Köpenicker Sommer is the historical parade on Saturday at 2 PM — a tribute to the district's most famous anecdote: the "Captain of Köpenick." In 1906, the unemployed shoemaker Wilhelm Voigt disguised himself as a Prussian captain, marched with a ragtag group of soldiers to the Köpenick town hall, and plundered the city treasury — a coup that made international headlines and inspired Carl Zuckmayer's stage adaptation. The parade commemorates this story with costumed performers, horse-drawn carriages, historical uniforms, and town flags.

Fireworks Display over the Dahme

On Saturday evening around 10:30 PM, a spectacular fireworks display over the Dahme river concludes the main program of the second festival day. The Dahme — the river flowing through Köpenick — provides an extraordinary backdrop: the fireworks are launched from the water and are clearly visible from the old town and the surrounding riverside promenades.

Three Stages, 200 Exhibitors, Amusement Rides

A diverse program unfolds on the three stages — from cover bands and Schlager artists to local musicians and children's entertainment. The 200 exhibitor stalls offer everything from street food (German, international) to arts and crafts, flea market goods, association stands, and community organizations. The amusement rides (carousels, Ferris wheel, bumper cars, children's carousels, game stalls) are spread throughout the old town streets.

Köpenick as a Setting

The old town of Köpenick is one of Berlin's most historic neighborhoods. The Slavic settlement at the confluence of the Spree and Dahme rivers is significantly older than Berlin and Cölln; the medieval town was founded around 1240. The architectural fabric has been preserved: narrow alleys, Köpenick Palace on the Schlossinsel (now the Museum of Decorative Arts), the old town hall (site of the Captain of Köpenick episode), and the Dahme bridges. The Köpenicker Sommer utilizes this backdrop as a programmatic backbone — unlike most major Berlin events, the historical architecture here is an integral part of the experience.
