The largest Christmas market in Northern Germany — over three kilometers of glittering lights
The Rostock Christmas Market is quite something: with a length of over three kilometers, it is considered the largest Christmas market in Northern Germany. It stretches across the historic city center of the Hanseatic city — from the Neuer Markt through Kröpeliner Straße, Universitätsplatz, and Breite Straße to the Kröpeliner-Tor-Vorplatz and the Fischerbastion. If you want to walk the entire length, you should allow plenty of time.
More than 300 showmen, traders, and restaurateurs from several countries participate in the market. The offerings range from regional arts and crafts and Christmas decorations to culinary specialties — and of course, mulled wine, candied almonds, and Northern German delicacies. Numerous amusement rides ensure that the funfair character is not neglected.
Above it all towers a 34-meter-high Ferris wheel, offering views over the festively illuminated old town. Towering Christmas trees, a fairy tale forest, and a fairy tale stage shape the cityscape during Advent. Those who enjoy history can visit the Historical Christmas Market at the Kloster zum Heiligen Kreuz, which offers a quieter, medieval-inspired atmosphere.
The Rostock Christmas Market is explicitly aimed at families: Wednesdays are family days, Santa Claus and the fairy tale lady can be met in person, and a varied entertainment program accompanies the entire market period.
What makes the Rostock Christmas Market particularly special is its backdrop: the brick Gothic city center with its gabled houses, St. Peter's Church, and the medieval Kröpeliner Tor form a setting where fairy lights, market stalls, and festive cheer come together to create an atmospheric whole.
From November 23rd to December 22nd, 2026, the Rostock Christmas Market will once again transform the historic city center into Northern Germany's largest Advent experience. Over three kilometers, market stall after market stall lines the route — from Neuer Markt to Fischerbastion. Over 300 exhibitors and traders offer arts and crafts, Christmas decorations, and culinary delights. Wednesdays are family days, and a varied entertainment program accompanies the entire market period.
Admission to the Christmas market is free. Amusement rides, the Ferris wheel, and food and drink are subject to charges.
Monday to Thursday 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM, Friday and Saturday 11:00 AM – 9:30 PM, Sunday 11:30 AM – 8:00 PM. Wednesdays are family days.
The city center is optimally accessible by tram and bus (stops Neuer Markt, Universität, Kröpeliner Tor). Arrive by train at Rostock Hauptbahnhof, then take a tram to the center. Parking garages are located on the outskirts of the city center.
Enjoy the market from the Ferris wheel and be sure to make a detour to the Historical Christmas Market at the Kloster zum Heiligen Kreuz.
