Traditional Oktoberfest on the Domplatz in front of the Mariendom Cathedral β festival beer, hearty cuisine, and rides with a family day every Wednesday
The Erfurt Oktoberfest is one of Thuringia's most popular Volksfeste (traditional festivals) and at the same time one of the most beautiful Oktoberfest versions outside of Bavaria. The venue is the expansive Domplatz β framed by the Mariendom Cathedral and the Severikirche Church, which together form the landmark of the state capital. Against this backdrop, the city celebrates festival beer, hearty cuisine, carousels, and gingerbread hearts for almost three weeks.
Approximately 50 showmen and amusement rides are lined up along about 600 linear meters: carousels, Ferris wheel-like structures, shooting galleries, and almond stands. The festival tents serve festival beer according to the Munich Purity Law, along with roast chicken, pork knuckle, suckling pig, pretzels, and all the classics. Live bands and DJs provide the atmosphere β from traditional swaying songs to Wiesn (Oktoberfest) hits parties. Traditional attire β Lederhosen and Dirndls β has become part of Erfurt's cityscape in late summer.
A hallmark of the Erfurt Oktoberfest: every Wednesday is Family Day with significantly reduced prices for rides and food. This makes the festival an ideal family destination and eases the strain on wallets during the weekends. Furthermore: smoke-free zones, stroller-friendly paths, and a family area with play activities.
Erfurt is the state capital of Thuringia and, with over 215,000 inhabitants, the largest city in the state. The Domplatz is the heart of the old town β flat, easily accessible, with the cathedral steps serving as a natural grandstand. ICE high-speed train connections via Erfurt main station bring guests from Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, and Leipzig in under two hours. During the Oktoberfest, special tram services run by EVAG are in operation.
Erfurt's Volksfeste (traditional festivals) turn the Domplatz into the hotspot of late summer city life for almost three weeks. During the day, a cozy stroll with gingerbread hearts and almond stands, in the evening, a roaring atmosphere in the festival tents. The combination of Wiesn (Oktoberfest) folklore + Erfurt's landmarks is unique β and has been firmly established for tourism over the years.
