31st edition of the neighbourhood festival in Neckarstadt-Ost under the motto “Diversity instead of Simplicity”
The Max-Joseph-Straßenfest originated in the early 1990s as a response from Neckarstadt-Ost to xenophobic attacks in Hoyerswerda, Rostock-Lichtenhagen, Mölln, and Solingen. A handful of neighbours, associations, trade unionists, and church communities decided back then to organize an open street festival on Max-Joseph-Straße – as a visible commitment to a multicultural urban society. What began as a one-off alliance has become a tradition, entering its 31st round in 2026. The motto “Diversity instead of Simplicity” has accompanied the festival from the very beginning and is its guiding principle.
The centrepiece of the festival is the stage at the turning circle of Max-Joseph-Straße. Traditionally, the Mannheim children's circus groups Trolori and Aladin kick things off with acrobatics, juggling, and clowning. Throughout the afternoon and evening, local and regional acts will perform: Jazz combos like Tunestime, international vocal music with Fischlabor, rebel folk by Axel Reid, the duo Daniel Sich and Markus Krämer, rock-pop-funk with the band Be4, and interactive contributions from the National Theatre Mannheim.
Alongside the stage, a packed children's programme runs all afternoon. Magician Tilda performs magic for the little ones, and “Anne und den Papas” sings children's songs. The Erlenhof Youth Centre, Neckarstadt Theatre Workshop, and Mannheim Youth Farm will have hands-on activity stands – crafting sessions, games, and small performances round off the day.
Neckarstadt-Ost is one of Mannheim's most international districts, and the festival fully reflects this: Communities from Turkey, Iran, Eritrea, Vietnam, Italy, Morocco, and Latin America cook at the stalls. In addition, associations, refugee aid organizations, youth centres, counselling services, churches, and trade unions present themselves. A tombola helps with funding, and the net proceeds from the entire festival go towards integration projects and aid for refugee children.
The Max-Joseph-Straßenfest is organized entirely by volunteers. An initiative group of neighbours, associations, district councillors, and committed residents plans the festival throughout the year. This deep-rooted connection to the neighbourhood is why the festival, in its 31st edition, still functions exactly as it did in 1995: not imposed from above, but created by the street itself.
From 2 p.m., the festival opens on Max-Joseph-Straße in Neckarstadt-Ost. Stage at the turning circle, international food stalls, information booths from local initiatives, children's programme until the evening.
