Neckarstadt-West — Mannheim's Creative Quarter
Neckarstadt-West is one of Mannheim's most colorful and multicultural districts — on the Neckar riverbank opposite the city center, with around 22,000 inhabitants from over 100 nations. Characterized by industrial culture, Wilhelminian-era architecture, and a strong migration background, Neckarstadt-West is Mannheim's most important creative quarter: artists, writers, musicians, architects, and designers live and work here. Studios, artist houses, and alternative cultural venues shape the neighborhood.
Lichtmeile — Festival of District Management Tradition
The Lichtmeile was launched in 2004 when the Neckarstadt-West District Management wanted to create an annual event to showcase the district's creative energy and attract tourists from Mannheim's city center to Neckarstadt. Since then, the festival has taken place annually in mid-October — in 2026, it will be the 22nd edition from Friday, October 16th, to Sunday, October 18th, 2026. The event area stretches along Mittelstraße and the adjacent streets of Neckarstadt-West.
Program Focus 1: Neckarstädter Nächte — Friday 16.10. 7–11 PM
The opening on Friday, October 16th, 2026, 7:00 PM – 11:00 PM, features the Neckarstädter Nächte — distributed live concerts and DJ sets in cafés, bars, galleries, and studios along Mittelstraße. Genres include: Jazz, Electro, Punk, Rock, Reggae, Blues, and more. The venues open their doors free of charge, and the audience moves from one location to the next — a crawl format that allows for a full exploration of the district.
Program Focus 2: Open Studio Day — Saturday 17.10. 6–11 PM
On Saturday, October 17th, 2026, 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM, the Neckarstadt studios open their doors. Artists present their workshops and current work: painting, photography, street art, live music, and readings. Visitors can immerse themselves in the creative world of Neckarstadt, talk to the artists, buy works, and discover new spaces. A unique format that many Mannheim residents use for an annual district exploration day.
Program Focus 3: Culture for Children — Sunday 18.10. 1–5 PM
On Sunday, October 18th, 2026, 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM, the children's program takes place: workshops, performances, and hands-on activities for children aged 4–12. Artists, theater groups, musicians, and educational projects offer a diverse range of activities — from painting studios and theater workshops to a district detective tour.
Program Focus 4: Literature in Unusual Places — Sunday 18.10. 4–9:30 PM
Parallel to the children's program — and running a bit longer into the evening — the "Literature in Unusual Places" format takes place on Sunday, October 18th, 2026, 4:00 PM – 9:30 PM. Authors read in unconventional spaces: back rooms, staircases, entranceways, disused workshops, park corners. A walk from reading to reading — literature as an exploration of urban space.
~150 Acts in Four Program Areas
With over 150 registered acts (as of 2025), the Lichtmeile is one of the largest decentralized cultural festivals in Southern Germany. The enormous program density is spread across the four program areas, utilizing the entire infrastructure of Neckarstadt-West — cafés, bars, galleries, studios, backyards, staircases, and alternative cultural venues.
