Siegen — the Krönchen above the University City
With around 100,000 inhabitants, Siegen is the largest city in Südwestfalen, home to the University of Siegen, and the administrative center of the Siegen-Wittgenstein district. The city's landmark is the „Krönchen“ — the distinctive golden crown atop the tower of the Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas Church), one of the rarest examples of a hexagonal Romanesque hall church in Germany. To say „unterm Krönchen“ (under the Krönchen) means the Siegen city center below the Nikolaikirche — the historic heart of the city.
Premiere 2026 — a New Format for KulturSiegen
In 2026, KulturSiegen, the municipal cultural office, is expanding its KulturSommer program with a new focus: street music as a curated event. Instead of scattered street musicians, who play daily in the pedestrian zone anyway, a full-day program will be set up on August 15, 2026 — several acts simultaneously in multiple locations, choreographed between squares and streets.
Program — Three Acts, Five Venues
From 2:00 PM onwards, the acts will simultaneously perform throughout Siegen's city center. The main stage is the market square by the town hall, with additional performances spread across Bahnhofstraße, Kölner Straße, Poststraße, and Marburger Straße. Three acts are confirmed: the „Living Jukebox“ — a mobile music box where passersby can „order“ songs, and a vocalist or band performs them live; the polka duo Las Polkas with their traditional repertoire; and a dancing brass band that parades through the streets, inviting passersby to join in the dance.
Concept — Culture Amidst Urban Life
KulturSiegen's concept is clear: not to confine culture to the concert hall, but to bring it right into the heart of urban life — onto castle squares, into parks, onto city squares. Street music is the simplest, most accessible format: everyone can listen, no one needs a ticket, and the character of a summer weekend is enriched by live music. The choice of August 15 (Assumption Day) as the date is not accidental — even though the holiday is not a public holiday in North Rhine-Westphalia, it influences the southern German-Bavarian communities; here in Siegen, it's a regular Saturday.
Discover Siegen — What to Do Besides Street Music?
Anyone visiting Siegen can visit the Krönchen via the Nikolaikirche, explore the Museum für Gegenwartskunst (Museum of Contemporary Art) or the Siegerlandmuseum (in the Upper Castle), take a stroll in the Schlossgarten (Palace Garden) or on the Häusling, or take an excursion into the rural transition area of the Sauerland. Siegen is easily accessible from Cologne (90 km), Frankfurt (120 km), and Wuppertal (90 km) — a good city for a day trip.
KulturSommer 2026 — The Framework
The street music festival is a component of KulturSiegen's larger KulturSommer 2026, which hosts numerous open-air concerts, theater performances, and festival days in Siegen's city center and parks between early and late summer. The full program and dates can be viewed at kultursiegen.de.
