Four Days of the Middle Ages in a Jubilee Year
The Medieval Market at Homburg Castle in Nümbrecht is one of the most atmospheric medieval events in North Rhine-Westphalia. In 2026, the market runs from April 30th to May 3rd and coincides with two historic anniversaries: 750 years of Homburg Castle and 100 years of the Castle Museum. The organizer is Kramerey vnd Kurtzweyl GmbH, one of Germany's most experienced medieval event organizers.
TANZWUT Exclusively on Thursday Evening
The opening on Thursday evening is the secret highlight of the 2026 edition: TANZWUT — the well-known German medieval folk-rock band — will play an exclusive open-air concert in the castle complex starting at 4:30 PM. For TANZWUT fans from all over the Rhineland and Westphalia, this is a unique experience because the band rarely performs at medieval markets.
Crafts, Combat, and Fire Shows
The program offers the full spectrum of a premium medieval market:
- Craft demonstrations — blacksmiths, woodturners, potters, leatherworkers, glassblowers work before the visitors' eyes
- Combat demonstrations — staged fights in historical armor
- Fire shows — evening pyrotechnics with medieval choreographies
- Medieval music — minstrels, bagpipes, drums on several stages
- Archery for visitors (for a fee)
- Dubbing ceremony for children — a popular family ritual with a wooden sword and knight's certificate
- Market stalls with over 100 stands for jewelry, leather goods, fabrics, mead, beer, and medieval food
Homburg Castle — 750 Years of History
Homburg Castle is one of the oldest hilltop castles in North Rhine-Westphalia. First documented in 1276, it was the residence of the Counts of Sayn for centuries. Today, it houses the Castle Museum (founded in 1926, hence the 100-year anniversary in 2026) with collections on regional history. The castle impressively towers over the valley — an ideal medieval backdrop.
Nümbrecht in the Oberbergischer Kreis
Nümbrecht is a state-recognized climatic health resort in the Oberbergischer Kreis district of North Rhine-Westphalia. The municipality is located in the Bergisches Land region between Cologne and Siegen, nestled in a wooded low mountain landscape. Homburg Castle is one of the region's tourist highlights.
