Christmas market around the historic Bielstein Castle on the 4th Advent weekend 2026 in Wiehl-Bielstein, organized by the Bielstein Heritage Association
Bielstein is a district of Wiehl in the Oberbergischer Kreis (North Rhine-Westphalia) — located in the Bergisch-Sauerländisches Mittelgebirge mountain range south of Cologne. With around 6,000 inhabitants, Bielstein is one of the smaller but traditional districts of Wiehl. Its historical landmark is Bielstein Castle — a medieval castle complex, partially preserved today, forming a striking feature of the townscape. The Christmas market around the castle has been a firm fixture in the Oberbergischer event calendar for over a decade.
The Bielstein Christmas Market takes place every year on the 4th Advent weekend — the last Advent Saturday and Sunday before Christmas. In 2025, it was December 20/21; in 2026, according to the calendar logic, it will likely be held on December 19/20 — exact confirmation from the Heritage Association will follow soon. The late date in Advent makes the market one of the last Christmas market experiences before Christmas and gives it a special atmosphere — most commercial markets are already over, here the Oberberg village celebrates the eve.
The market's appearance is defined by over 50 wooden, festively decorated stalls — a uniform, traditional style that deliberately does not allow plastic stands. The stalls offer Christmas toys, decorations, nativity scenes, wreaths, and handmade gifts. In addition, there are culinary stalls with tarte flambée, crêpes, potato pancakes — and in the castle house itself, a café with homemade cakes.
As in 2025 (as a reference for the 2026 format), traditional Christmas music is curated by local associations and bands: the Steirische Harmonika Orchester, Posaunenchor Remperg, the band Red Clay, and the Bielsteiner Männerchor have shaped the program in recent years. The Saturday evening dance from 8 PM is provided by the band Nachtexpress — an established part of the market that distinguishes it from purely culinary Christmas markets.
The official opening is traditionally held on Saturday at 2 PM by Mayor Ulrich Stücker — the political ceremony to start the event. Afterwards, the stalls open, the musical program begins, and the market fills with visitors from all over the Oberbergischer Kreis.
The organizer is the Bielstein Heritage Association (Heimatverein Bielstein e.V.) — a voluntary organization that preserves Bielstein's cultural heritage and identity. The Heritage Association handles organization, permits, stall allocation, and security — and finances its diverse activities with the proceeds. The Christmas market is the association's largest single event.
Wiehl-Bielstein is located in the Oberbergischer Kreis, about 50 kilometers east of Cologne. By car: A 4 exit Engelskirchen-Ründeroth, then follow signs for Wiehl-Bielstein. By public transport: Bus line 309 from Engelskirchen train station (Oberbergische Bahn / RB 25 from Cologne) to Bielstein. Ample parking is available in Bielstein and the surrounding recreational area. Bielstein is situated on the edge of the Bergisches Land — scenically attractive and picturesquely snow-covered in the Christmas season.
The Bielstein Heritage Association (Heimatverein Bielstein e.V.) is planning the next edition of the Bielstein Christmas Market for the 4th Advent weekend in 2026. The exact dates will be officially confirmed in the weeks leading up to the event — presumably Saturday, December 19, and Sunday, December 20, 2026.
The proven format remains: over 50 wooden stalls around Bielstein Castle, festively decorated with handmade sales items (jewelry, nativity scenes, toys, arrangements), culinary offerings (tarte flambée, crêpes, potato pancakes, mulled wine), a café in the castle house with homemade cakes. As always, the musical accompaniment will be provided by local choirs, the Steirische Harmonika Orchester, the Posaunenchor Remperg, and the Bielsteiner Männerchor. The Saturday evening dance from 8 PM will feature the band Nachtexpress.
