20 Years of Saarland Metal – Anniversary Festival with Sampler Bands from Two Decades
Saarland Underground has been the most important showcase for heavy guitar music from Saarland since 2006. Originally started as a CD sampler project, it documents Saarland's active metal, hard rock, and punk scene year after year. More than 20 samplers have been released over two decades – they are now a kind of sound archive of the region and a starting point for many band careers.
The festival takes place at the Studio 30 Music Club on Mainzer Straße in Saarbrücken. For decades, the club has been the central venue for metal, punk, and hardcore in Saarland and boasts a loyal regular clientele. With its manageable capacity, it offers an intense concert experience – the stage and audience are close together, making concerts a meeting point.
For the 20th anniversary, only bands that have been featured on the sampler in the last 20 years have been invited. The lineup promises a historical journey through the scene: Sonic Dynamite with classic heavy metal, Bad Butler with uncompromising traditional heavy metal, Trickster's Day with melodic hard rock, Jesterain, Roadkill BBQ, and Arctic Winter are on the list, along with other sampler veterans.
As the state capital, Saarbrücken has a small but very active subculture scene. Studio 30, alongside Garage and Vorortklub, is one of the few permanent venues for loud music. The Saarland Underground Festival has been a fixture here for years and is considered the kick-off event for the Saar metal scene each year.
Unlike many festivals with nationally known headliners, Saarland Underground focuses purely on regionality: all bands come either from Saarland itself or have a direct connection to the scene through the sampler. For fans of the Saar music scene, this is the central opportunity of the year to experience nine local bands live in one day.
One-day indoor festival with a compact schedule: Doors open at 2:30 PM, first act at 3:00 PM, concluding around 11:00 PM. Nine bands will perform consecutively on a single stage – Studio 30 is small enough for quick changeovers between sets and large enough to create a true festival atmosphere.
