Three days of live music under the open sky — the St. Johanner Altstadt celebrates its 50th anniversary
For almost half a century, the Altstadtfest Saarbrücken has been the musical summer event of the state capital. What began in 1977 as a small neighborhood festival in the St. Johanner Altstadt has become one of the largest free music festivals in the Saarland today — three days of live music on seven stages, hundreds of thousands of visitors, and a program ranging from mainstream pop to the Saarland indie scene.
The stages are spread across the historic squares and alleys of the old town. The SR1 stage in front of the Staatstheater is the main stage with the big names — KAMRAD, TwoColors, and MilleniumKid have performed here recently. The Energie-SaarLorLux stage at St. Johanner Markt features regional and national bands, often with a pop-rock leaning. Other stages are dedicated to Jazz, Soul, and Blues, Reggae and World Music, as well as emerging newcomer bands from the Saarland and the greater region.
What makes the Altstadtfest special: it doesn't take place on a festival grounds on the outskirts of the city, but right in the middle of Saarbrücken's old town. The baroque facades of Schlossplatz, the narrow alleys around St. Johanner Markt, Stiftsplatz, and the Saarbrücker Schlosskirche — everything becomes a backdrop. Restaurants, bars, and cafés remain open, many set up their own small stalls, and the entire district transforms into an open-air party mile.
The 2026 edition is special: the Altstadtfest is celebrating its 50th birthday. The state capital is planning an anniversary program that honors the festival's history while also setting new accents. Top acts will be announced from May 27, 2026, on the official website. As in previous years, two to three national headliners are expected on the main SR1 stage, complemented by the broad program on the other stages.
In addition to the stages, there is an arts and crafts market around the Schlosskirche, an extensive children's program on Schlossplatz, culinary offerings from the Saarland and the greater region (Schwenker, Lyoner, Dibbelabbes, specialties from Lorraine), as well as food trucks with international cuisine. Admission is always free — that's part of the festival's ethos.
The St. Johanner Altstadt is the vibrant heart of Saarbrücken — a pedestrian-friendly old town with Renaissance and Baroque buildings, galleries, boutiques, and one of the densest gastronomic scenes in Germany. Located directly on the banks of the Saar river, it's a magnet for strollers from Saarland, Lorraine, and Luxembourg even on days without the Altstadtfest. The city is located in the Saarbrücken regional association in the Saarland.
Three days of Saarbrücken summer in its most concentrated form: From Friday afternoon to Sunday evening, bands from Saarland, Germany, and the greater region will perform on seven stages spread across the old town. For its 50th anniversary, the city administration is planning a special program — details will be published from May 27, 2026, on altstadtfest.saarbruecken.de.

The SR1 stage in front of the Staatstheater serves as the main stage, the Energie-SaarLorLux stage at St. Johanner Markt as the second major stage. Additional stages are located at Schlossplatz, Tbilisser Platz, Stiftsplatz, and in the alleys.
Free admission. Food, drinks, and market goods are paid for on-site.
From Saarbrücken main station to St. Johanner Altstadt on foot: about 15 minutes. By bus or Saarbahn to the "Johanneskirche" or "Landwehrplatz" stop. By car: parking garages at the main station, in Stengelstraße, at Schlossplatz. During the festival, many city center streets are closed — public transport is recommended.
Free admission to all stages. Food and drinks are paid for on-site at the stalls and in the establishments.
There are numerous hotels in the Saarbrücken city center (Mercure, Leonardo, Victor’s Residenz) — due to the festival, you should book in May/June.
Come on foot or use public transport — parking in the old town is practically impossible during the festival. The stages are all within a 10-minute walk of each other, so you can easily switch from one genre world to another. Those who want to eat in peace should dine in the outer districts (Nauwieserviertel, Eisenbahnstraße).
