The joint summer festival of all local associations in the Upper Palatinate pilgrimage site of Fuchsmühl, Tirschenreuth district
In the Upper Palatinate, there is a special form of association festival that does not exist in this density in any other German region: the Bürgerfest (community festival), which is not supported by a single association but by a federation of all local associations. In Fuchsmühl, in the Tirschenreuth district, around 25 associations – from the fire department and shooting club to the traditional costume group and sports club to the parish community – jointly manage setup, catering, and the program. The Bürgerfest takes place alternately with other major events, usually every two years.
For the 2026 edition, the Fuchsmühl associations decided on an important investment: The festival fund, saved over many years – around €13,749 – was used to co-finance the purchase of their own festival tent. This allows the Bürgerfest to plan independently of external tent rental companies and with an expanded program.
Fuchsmühl is located in the Steinwald Nature Park, one of the most characteristic low mountain range landscapes in the Upper Palatinate. The town is also a pilgrimage site: the Church of Maria Hilf attracts pilgrims from all over Bavaria every year. The Bürgerfest and the pilgrimage are separate occasions – the Bürgerfest is the secular village festival celebrating community life and conviviality.
The character of the festival is clearly Upper Palatinate-Bohemian. Brass music dominates the musical program – in 2026, the regionally known Pirker Blechmusi will play on Saturday, June 20th, from 7:00 PM to midnight. In addition, there will be a festival parade, a ceremony, performances by the youth groups of the associations, festival catering with Upper Palatinate specialties, draft beer, and the Maypole theme, which also finds its place at the Bürgerfest.
The associations have decided to co-finance their own festival tent from the festival fund (around €13,749). This means the 2026 Bürgerfest will be held for the first time in new, association-owned infrastructure – the program can be expanded, and the festival gains independence.
Around 25 associations from Fuchsmühl provide catering together: fire department, shooters, sports, youth groups, traditional costume groups, and parish community – each association takes on a shift or a stall.
