Kirwa in the market town of Falkenberg
The Falkenberger Kirchweih – known regionally as “Kirwa” – is one of the central traditional weekends in the market town of Falkenberg in the northern district of Tirschenreuth in the Oberpfalz. It has been celebrated for generations on the third weekend in September; in 2026, the festival takes place from September 18–20.
Three days of festivities around the market square and castle
The festivities begin on Friday with a festive church service and tavern hospitality. The highlight on Saturday is the traditional Kirwa folk dance in the chapter hall of Falkenberg Castle, organized by Forum Falkenberg. It kicks off with a polonaise, followed by waltzes, polkas, and regional folk dances – traditionally concluding with a communal round dance. Sunday is marked by a procession, a festive church service, and convivial tavern life.
Hospitality at »Zum Goldenen Stern« and »Roter Ochse«
During the Kirwa, the long-established inns Zum Goldenen Stern and Roter Ochse serve classic Oberpfalz festive cuisine: goose, duck, game, carp, and typical Kirwa specialties. In Falkenberg, a Zoigl town, the main beverage served is Zoiglbier – the traditional, cooperatively brewed community beer of the northern Oberpfalz.
Falkenberg Castle as a backdrop
Falkenberg Castle, once the seat of Imperial Count Friedrich Werner von der Schulenburg and now a venue and hotel, towers over the market town. The historic chapter hall, accessible via the castle drawbridge, is the venue for the Kirwa folk dance – an unparalleled backdrop for Oberpfalz traditions.
Location in the Oberpfalz
Falkenberg is located in the Tirschenreuth district in the state of Bavaria, in the Stiftland region and on the Waldnaab river. The region is one of the centers of Zoigl culture and traditional Kirwas — the Falkenberg weekend is a key date in the Oberpfalz traditions calendar.

- Lovers of Oberpfalz Kirwa traditions and folk dances
