Bavaria's second-oldest Christmas market with a giant Advent calendar
The Weiden Christmas Market looks back on a history dating back to 1576 and is considered the second-oldest Christmas market in Bavaria. In the independent city of Weiden in the Upper Palatinate, the Oberer and Unterer Markt around the historic Old Town Hall transform into a festively illuminated Christmas city. The organizer is the City of Weiden.
The landmark of the market is the Giant Advent Calendar: The Old Town Hall becomes one of the largest Advent calendars in Germany. 24 windows of the historic facade become small doors, behind which a picture painted by children appears daily. Two little angels and a big angel open a door every day – Mondays to Sundays at 4:30 PM, on Christmas Eve at 11 AM.
From the Oberer to the Unterer Markt, festively decorated stalls offer arts and crafts and culinary specialties: mulled wine, gingerbread, candied almonds, cotton candy, Langos, and crêpes. Varied live music on two stages creates a festive atmosphere, complemented by numerous accompanying events. For young guests, an ice rink and a children's carousel invite them to linger.
With its long history, the famous town hall Advent calendar, and the picturesque setting of the historic old town, the Weiden Christmas Market is one of the most important Advent markets in Eastern Bavaria and a popular destination for visitors from all over the Upper Palatinate and beyond.
The 2026 edition of the Weiden Christmas Market runs from November 28 to December 23, 2026. Around the historic Old Town Hall, the Oberer and Unterer Markt transform into a festively illuminated Christmas city.
