Authentic Communal Brewer's Zoigl in the Upper Palatinate Tradition Village
Zoigl is more than just beer: it's living community craftsmanship. In Falkenberg, one of the five Zoigl towns in the Upper Palatinate alongside Neuhaus, Windischeschenbach, Eslarn, and Mitterteich, several communal brewers take turns brewing their own uncarbonated cellar beer in the historic communal brewery. The finished brew is then served in private Zoigl taverns — recognizable by the traditional six-pointed Zoigl star on the door.
The Fischer family runs "Zoigl Kramer Wolf" on Tirschenreuther Straße, one of Falkenberg's three Zoigl taverns (alongside Hafnerkarl and Schwoazhansl). The establishment is a member of the Protection Association for Authentic Zoigl from Communal Brewers e.V. and bears the official seal of the Bavarian State Ministry, which protects the Upper Palatinate Zoigl culture as intangible cultural heritage.
The property combines two worlds: The historic Heustodl (hay barn) is a spacious event barn for up to several hundred guests — ideal for club celebrations, weddings, and larger gatherings. The Zoigl-Stubn (Zoigl parlour) is the intimate common room with wooden tables, a tiled stove, and all the warmth of Upper Palatinate hospitality.
Much of what is served here comes from their own facilities: Zoigl beer from the communal brewery, sausages and meats from the in-house butcher shop, snack platters with Pressack (head cheese), Hauswurst (homemade sausage), Saurer Zipfel (sour sausage), and hearty Upper Palatinate delicacies. Those who come here come for authenticity.
The market town of Falkenberg is located in the Tirschenreuth district in the north of the Upper Palatinate. The medieval Falkenberg Castle, once a refuge for the resistance fighter Friedrich Werner Count von der Schulenburg, towers over the town. The region between Stiftland, Fichtelgebirge, and the Czech border is scenically beautiful and culturally characterized by traditions, glassmaking, and pilgrimages.
Zoigl service is not a permanent operation: Each communal brewer only serves on designated weekends, coordinated in the Falkenberg brewers' calendar. Kramer Wolf usually opens from Friday to Sunday (also Monday on public holidays), starting at 11 AM.
The 2026 Zoigl season at Kramer Wolf follows the traditional rotation principle of the Falkenberg communal brewers. Freshly brewed Zoigl will be served on around eleven long weekends between May and the end of November — each time a new brew, each time a little different.
The Fischer family welcomes its guests in the cozy Zoigl parlour or the large hay barn, accompanied by snack platters from their own butcher shop and hearty Upper Palatinate delicacies.
Open daily from 11 AM. Updates and short-term changes at zoigl-kramer-wolf.de and in the official Falkenberg Zoigl calendar.
Free admission. Pay after consumption. Zoigl in a half-liter glass at typical Upper Palatinate inn prices, snack platters usually between €8 and €14, hot dishes €10–€18. Daily prices directly at the establishment — the Fischer family keeps prices deliberately affordable.
Falkenberg is located in the Tirschenreuth district, about 25 km east of Weiden in der Oberpfalz. By car via the A93 (exit Mitterteich-Süd or Wiesau), then towards Falkenberg. By public transport: Wiesau train station (Nuremberg – Marktredwitz line), then bus or taxi from there.
During the service weekends, usually Friday to Sunday from 11 AM. Current dates always at zoigl-kramer-wolf.de or in the Zoigl calendar.
For larger groups and family celebrations, reservations in the Heustodl are recommended at +49 9637 328. Spontaneous visits to the Zoigl-Stubn are usually possible, but it can get crowded on festival weekends.
