The largest city festival in the Upper Palatinate
The Neumarkter Altstadtfest, with its five stages, around 65 bands and dance groups, and approximately 100 stalls, is one of the largest city festivals in the Upper Palatinate. For three days, the market square, Residenzplatz and Schlossplatz, Untere and Obere Marktstraße, and the adjacent alleys become a continuous festival mile. The City of Neumarkt is the organizer, hosting the festival together with clubs, gastronomy, and local retailers.
Program and Stages
The five stages are spread across the old town and offer a wide musical spectrum: traditional brass music, rock and cover bands, singer-songwriters, dance groups, and performances by local clubs. The program includes both regional acts from the Upper Palatinate and Middle Franconia, as well as nationally known bands. Between the stages, stalls offer Upper Palatinate cuisine, Franconian specialties, beer from regional breweries, and wine.
Identity and Self-Image
The festival sees itself as a "traditional Upper Palatinate civic festival in a modern interpretation." The City of Neumarkt encapsulates this self-image in the guiding motto: "Strong Citizens – Strong Economy – Strong Hosts – Strong Culture – Strong City." With this, the Altstadtfest is linked to the civic and economic self-understanding of the district capital.
Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate
Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate, the seat of the district of the same name (09373) in the administrative region of Upper Palatinate, is located between Nuremberg and Regensburg on the historic connection between Middle Franconia and the Upper Palatinate. The medieval old town with its residence, castle, and city towers forms the natural stage for the festival, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year.
