Traditional main Kirchweih in the shadow of Weißenstein Castle
The municipality of Pommersfelden in the Bamberg district is a remarkable example of the density of Franconian Kirchweih tradition: no less than eight independent Kirchweihen are spread throughout the year across the various districts. Schweinbach (May), Sambach (June), Limbach (July), Steppach (July/August), Sambach Sports Festival (July/August), Weiher (August), Stolzenroth (November) — and the central Hauptkerwa Pommersfelden in October. The Pommersfelden Kerwa is the largest and oldest of these Kirchweihen and is at the center of the municipality's festival calendar.
Pommersfelden is famous beyond its municipal borders for its Weißenstein Castle — one of the most magnificent Baroque castles in Germany. Built between 1711 and 1718 under the patronage of Lothar Franz von Schönborn, it is the seat of the von Schönborn-Wiesentheid family and is considered a masterpiece of Franconian Baroque. The castle complex forms an extraordinary backdrop for the Hauptkerwa, which is celebrated in the immediate vicinity on the festival grounds or in the village center.
The Pommersfelden Hauptkerwa takes place every year in October and runs from Friday to Monday — four festival days with the classic program of Franconian folk festivals: beer tapping on Friday evening, festival tent program with brass band and cover bands, amusement rides (carousels, shooting galleries, food stalls), Sunday festival parade, and family day on Monday. The local clubs — fire department, marksmen, sports club, music club, traditional costume groups — operate their own stalls with Franconian specialties.
Anyone who wants to get to know Pommersfelden's diverse Kerwa culture can attend several dates throughout the year:
Pommersfelden has around 2,700 inhabitants and combines several historical districts into an agriculturally characterized municipality. Weißenstein Castle, the associated castle gardens, and the Baroque pilgrimage site shape its appearance. The Kirchweih is part of this cultural fabric and makes the municipality one of the most attractive folk festival locations in the Bamberg region.
The 2026 edition runs from Friday, October 16 to Monday, October 19 in Pommersfelden. Opening on Friday evening with beer tapping, Saturday and Sunday as main festival days, Monday with family program.
As every year, local clubs form the backbone of the event: the fire department, marksmen, sports club, and traditional costume groups operate their own stalls with Franconian cuisine and beer from the breweries of the Bamberg region.
