About Musikfestspiele Dresden

The Dresdner Musikfestspiele is one of Germany's most renowned classical festivals. For four weeks, it transforms the Saxon state capital into a stage for classical music, jazz, world music, and crossover. Under the direction of cellist Jan Vogler, the festival presents around 60 concerts and events annually in over two dozen venues – from the Semperoper and the Kulturpalast to the Frauenkirche and smaller halls in the Altstadt and Neustadt.

A Festival of International Standing

Since its founding in 1978, the Dresdner Musikfestspiele has been one of Europe's most important classical music festivals. Every year in late spring, the international classical scene gathers in Dresden – with top orchestras, acclaimed soloists, and a programmatic openness that has long extended beyond pure classical music. Jazz, world music, dance, theatre, and comedy are now just as much a part of its profile as symphony concerts and chamber music evenings.

Jan Vogler and His Artistic Ambition

Cellist Jan Vogler has directed the festival since 2009, developing it into a forum where top artists from various genres meet. Each edition follows an overarching theme that shapes the program. Vogler also uses the festival to foster dialogue between historically informed performance practice and contemporary sound language – most recently, for example, in the Wagner cycles, which re-examine Wagner's works with historical instruments.

Venues Throughout the City

The concerts are spread across more than two dozen venues – from the grand halls of the Semperoper, Kulturpalast, and Frauenkirche to intimate spaces like the Albertinum, Pillnitz Castle, or the Transparent Factory. Unusual locations such as industrial halls or churches in the Neustadt are also part of the program. The geographical distribution makes the festival a city-wide event, transforming all of Dresden into a concert stage.

In the Context of Saxony

Dresden, the capital of the state of Saxony and seat of the Saxon State Government in the district-free municipality (AGS 14612), has always been a center of European musical culture. The Sächsische Staatskapelle, the Dresdner Philharmonie, and the Festspielorchester under Kent Nagano represent a 500-year musical tradition, which finds its annual climax in the Musikfestspiele.

A Magnet for Music Lovers

The festival attracts an international audience to Dresden every year. Concerts are often sold out months in advance, especially the opening and closing events, as well as the major orchestral concerts. Anyone visiting Dresden between mid-May and mid-June cannot escape the festival fever.

Musikfestspiele Dresden — edition 2026

The 49th edition of the Dresdner Musikfestspiele is themed «The Lightness of Being». 64 events are spread over four weeks across approximately 25 venues throughout the city – featuring classical music, jazz, world music, crossover, dance, theatre, and comedy. The opening is presented by the Dresdner Philharmonie under Tabita Berglund together with comedian Olaf Schubert; the finale features Bill Murray and Jan Vogler.

49th Edition – The Lightness of Being

The 2026 festival motto invites a programmatic journey through various moods and sound worlds. Festival director Jan Vogler has curated a program that combines musical weight and playful lightness – with almost 30 festival debuts and, at the same time, many familiar voices such as Igor Levit, Martha Argerich, Till Brönner, or Martina Gedeck.

Highlights from 64 Events

Cellomania returns for its third edition – around 30 star cellists will create their own mini-festival within the festival. The London Philharmonic Orchestra under Edward Gardner will be the Orchestra in Residence, dedicating their performances to Edward Elgar. Kent Nagano, with the Dresdner Festspielorchester and Concerto Köln, will conduct the conclusion of his Wagner cycle, «Götterdämmerung», on historical instruments.

Stars and Special Encounters

Bill Murray, along with Jan Vogler, Mira Wang, and Vanessa Perez, will shape the closing evening – featuring literary classics and music by Bach, Bernstein, Gershwin, and Piazzolla. Kian Soltani will focus on film music, while Alisa Weilerstein will connect Bach with contemporary works.
