International Summer Academy in the Baroque Marble Hall
The Collegium Musicum at Weissenstein Castle is one of Germany's most traditional summer academies. Since the late 1950s, young musicians from all over the world have gathered every summer in Pommersfelden (Bamberg district, Bavaria) to rehearse, learn, and perform together under the guidance of renowned tutors. The venue is the spectacular Marble Hall of Weissenstein Castle, a baroque palace built between 1711 and 1718 by Lothar Franz von Schönborn.
The festival spans nearly four weeks in July and August. The program includes symphony concerts, chamber music evenings, piano recitals, and a children's concert specially designed for young families. Some concerts are recorded and broadcast by Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR-KLASSIK) – a testament to the high artistic level of this summer academy.
The repertoire ranges from baroque music from the famous Schönborn Library to Viennese Classicism and works from the 20th century. Conductors and soloists such as Tadeusz Wojciechowski, Dorian Keilhack, Raoul Grüneis, and Irene Delgado-Jiménez have shaped the festival for years. For many young musicians, the Collegium Musicum is an important career step: it's where repertoire, stage experience, and international networks mature.
Weissenstein Castle is considered one of the most important baroque castles in Southern Germany. The Marble Hall, which gives the festival its unique atmosphere, is over 23 meters high and adorned with precious stucco work, ceiling frescoes, and marble inlays. During the concerts, architecture, visual arts, and music combine to create an overall experience that is unparalleled in Upper Franconia.
For four weeks, the Marble Hall of Weissenstein Castle becomes the focal point of one of Upper Franconia's most renowned classical summer festivals. Symphonies, chamber music, piano recitals, a children's concert, and an open-air concert with baroque fireworks mark the 69th season. The events are partly recorded by Bayerischer Rundfunk and broadcast on BR-KLASSIK.
