Frisian horsemanship in North Frisia — Amtsringreiten of the Ringreiterverein Saddelfast Mildstedt von 1920 e.V.
Ring-spearing is one of the oldest surviving equestrian competition forms in Northern Germany, with strong roots in North Frisia and the Halligen islands. Unlike show jumping or dressage, it's not about obstacles or routines, but about precision and speed: with a lance in hand, the rider gallops at full speed towards a horizontally stretched string from which a small brass ring hangs. Those who cleanly remove the ring collect points; the rules vary slightly between clubs. Several rounds determine the winners and the royal title.
The Ringreiterverein Saddelfast Mildstedt von 1920 e.V. — the name "Saddelfast" is Plattdeutsch for "sattelfest" (firm in the saddle) — is one of the oldest riding clubs in the region. Several active ring-spearing and riding clubs in Mildstedt (including Reit- und Fahrverein Mildstedt) attest to the vibrant riding culture on the western edge of the Schleswigsche Geest.
The Amtsringreiten is the supra-regional competition that brings together riders from several clubs in the Amt Nordsee-Treene. The results count towards both the club standings and the personal kingship. Whoever achieves the highest score on the festival day is crowned the Ringreiter-King.
The day begins early — riders gather at 7:30 AM at the Kirchspielskrug, the traditional meeting point for Mildstedt residents. This is followed by a joint procession to the ring-spearing grounds, and then the competitions in several rounds. In the afternoon and evening, the king is proclaimed, followed by a banquet and dancing.
Mildstedt is a municipality with around 4,000 inhabitants on the western edge of the Schleswigsche Geest, in the district of Nordfriesland (Schleswig-Holstein), directly adjacent to the district town of Husum. The landscape shapes its agricultural and rural identity: horses, livestock, marsh, and geest soils. Ring-spearing here is not folklore — it is living sports culture with a long history.
The Mildstedt Ringreiterfest 2026 will follow the usual September rhythm. The club typically announces the exact date in the summer, via the Husum Tourism event page and club channels. In 2025, the Amtsringreiten took place on September 6th; a similar date can be expected for 2026.
As in previous years: early morning meeting at the Kirchspielskrug, procession to the ring-spearing grounds, several competition rounds, proclamation of the king in the afternoon, celebratory evening.
Classic Mildstedt day schedule: 7:30 AM meeting at the Kirchspielskrug, joint procession, Amtsringreiten competition in several rounds, proclamation of the king, celebratory evening. The exact times for 2026 will be communicated via the club and Husum Tourism.
