Traditional Marksmen's Festival in the Old Sports Hall — King's Shoot, Celebration Evening and Customs
Rantrum is a municipality with around 1,800 inhabitants in the Nordfriesland district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, located north of Husum at the transition to the geest landscape. Club life in Rantrum is more active than average for a municipality of this size — the Rantrum Marksmen's Guild is one of the oldest clubs in the town.
Marksmanship (Schützenwesen) is a vibrant tradition in Schleswig-Holstein, especially in the rural districts of Nordfriesland, Dithmarschen, and Schleswig-Flensburg. Schützenfeste combine sporting competition (King's Shoot with air rifle or small-caliber rifle), customs (festive procession, proclamation of the king, memorial march of former kings), and social components (celebration evening with music, dancing, catering).
The focus is on the King's Shoot: the royal titles for the coming year are contested among the club members — typically King and Queen, Vice-King or Adjutant, as well as a children's or youth king. The winners are crowned with insignia (king's chain, sash) and represent the club until the next Schützenfest at events in Rantrum and the region.
The venue for the festival is the old Rantrum sports hall, which is equipped with festive tables, a stage, and a bar for the occasion. After the King's Shoot, the convivial celebration evening follows with music, a shared meal, dancing, and the traditional proclamation. Catering and program are provided by the Marksmen's Guild; the festival is both internal to the club and open to guests from the village.
The Schützenfest of the Rantrum Marksmen's Guild will take place in 2026 on Sunday, July 19, in the old Rantrum sports hall. The program's highlight is the King's Shoot, followed by the proclamation and a celebration evening. The Marksmen's Guild traditionally invites members of several generations — and the Rantrum village community — for a convivial gathering.
