DIY Punk Rock in the Rothaargebirge
Bad Laasphe — a spa town with 14,000 inhabitants, nestled between the Eder and Lahn rivers in the heart of the Rothaargebirge — is not the place you'd expect to find a punk rock festival. That's precisely what makes the BALAROCK Festival special: a DIY punk rock open-air event that has taken place every summer on the Laasphe Schützenplatz since 2022, establishing itself as a fixture in the German punk rock scene. In 2026, the festival celebrates a double anniversary: its 5th edition and the 20th anniversary of the organizer Rockpalast Laasphe e.V.
Family-Friendly & Open-Minded
Unlike some punk festivals, BALAROCK consciously positions itself as 'family-friendly & open-minded' — a festival that brings together older punk generations with young fans and families. The organizers describe the festival as 'a small DIY punk rock open air in the heart of the Rothaargebirge' — deliberately kept small with around 800 visitors, but offering a high quality of stay and a personal atmosphere. Children, dogs on leashes, and older punks mingle here with a diverse festival family.
Line-up 2026 — Belvedere, MakeWar, Maid of Ace
According to the organizers, the 2026 line-up will be 'energetically charged' and 'extremely strong.' Confirmed acts include: Belvedere (Skate-punk legends from Canada), MakeWar (Brooklyn punk), Maid of Ace (UK all-female punk), RATSALAD., Skameleon (Ska-punk from Germany), Bolzenschuss, Must Be Wrong, Neat Mentals, Supercobra, Kruste, and Heathcliff from Munich. The selection reflects the BALAROCK concept: international top acts meet established German bands and newcomers.
Support from Initiative Musik & BKM
The 2026 edition receives funding from Initiative Musik (the central funding institution for pop music by the German federal government) and from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM). This public funding is particularly significant for a small DIY festival in a town of 14,000 inhabitants: it enables the booking of international acts (like Belvedere or MakeWar), which a festival financed solely by ticket sales of this size could hardly afford. The organizers emphasize that this funding makes the festival possible in its current form.
Rockpalast Laasphe e.V. — 20 Years of Concert Culture
The organizer is the association Rockpalast Laasphe e.V., which has been organizing concerts and cultural events in Bad Laasphe since 2006 — meaning 20 years by the 2026 season. What began in 2006 with small club concerts has developed over two decades into one of the most important volunteer-run concert initiatives in Südwestfalen. The BALAROCK Festival is the annual highlight of the association's work.
Bad Laasphe and the Wittgensteiner Land
Bad Laasphe is located in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district in southern NRW, nestled in the Rothaargebirge and the Wittgensteiner Land. The town was once the residence of the Princes of Wittgenstein and is now a spa and tourist town with Wittgenstein Castle, the Lahn spring, and extensive hiking trails. BALAROCK fits the town's identity: a festival that transforms the quiet mountain idyll into punk rock energy for a weekend — turning Bad Laasphe into an unusual spot on the international punk scene.
