Ringreiten Wohlauf Rantrum

An Old North Frisian Tradition

Ringreiten is one of the classic folk customs of the North Frisian west coast. Riders gallop down a straight track past a frame and attempt to catch a small metal ring (often only 1.5 to 2.5 cm in diameter) on the tip of their lance. Whoever hits the most rings becomes the Ringreiterkönig (ring riding king) or -königin (queen). The custom is deeply rooted in the North Frisia district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein — many communities host their own ring riding festival every summer.

Rantrum and the Wohlauf Association

The municipality of Rantrum is located in the North Frisia district between Husum and Friedrichstadt. The local riding association Wohlauf has been organising the ring riding festival for generations — the date for 2026 is officially in the calendar of the Rantrum municipality (rantrum.de). The venue is the Ringreiterplatz Rantrum, a festival ground specially prepared for the event.
