Harvest Thanksgiving, Environmental, and Village Festival on the Alt-Marzahn Village Green – for over 25 years on the third weekend of September
The Alt-Marzahn Village Green – popularly known as "Marzahn's most beautiful village green" – is the historic village center ensemble of the present-day Marzahn-Hellersdorf district, featuring the old village church, the impressive post mill, the KulturGut community center, the SchaMottchen ceramics barn, and the animal farm. Three days a year, this area transforms into a walkable festival mile: The Alt-Marzahn Harvest Festival has been held annually on the third weekend of September since the late 1990s.
The festival combines three strands into a single program. Firstly, classic harvest thanksgiving customs: harvest crown, farmer's market, stalls with regional specialties, parade, service in the village church. Secondly, the parallel Environmental Festival – in its 31st edition in 2026 – featuring information stands from BSR, Friends of the Gardens of the World, and nature conservation initiatives, interactive stations on climate, recycling, and sustainable education. Thirdly, the award ceremony for the district's school garden competition "A School Garden to Bite Into", which typically involves over 20 schools from Marzahn-Hellersdorf.
A diverse stage program will be presented on the central festival stage throughout all three days: live bands, DJ sets, folk ensembles, children's entertainment, traditional costume performances, and participatory dances. Around the village green, you'll find amusement rides – a classic family carousel, Ferris wheel, swing carousel – as well as market stalls offering bratwurst, lángos, crêpes, regional honeys, jams, mustards, and wine. District Mayor Nadja Zivkovic traditionally opens the festival on Friday afternoon.
The festival is organized by the Marzahn-Hellersdorf District Office in collaboration with KulturGut, the animal farm, and the associations around the village green – a central identity project for the Marzahn district and its rural village core amidst the large prefabricated housing estate.
