Berlin's oldest Volksfest — 123rd edition in Berlin-Tegel
The Schollenfest in Tegel has been a firm fixture of the Berlin late summer since 1903 — one of the capital's few continuously existing Volksfest traditions. The name goes back to the housing estate "Freie Scholle", a cooperative housing settlement in Tegel, in the vicinity of which the festival has been held for decades. In 2026, it will be the 123rd edition — a number unmatched among Berlin's Volksfeste.
Around 20 rides and game stalls line up on the festival grounds at Waidmannsluster Damm in the Tegel district (Reinickendorf borough) — from historic carousels (hardly found anywhere else in Berlin anymore) to dodgems, shooting galleries, and tombola stalls, to smaller roller coasters and Ferris wheel variants. For the little ones: duck fishing, wheel of fortune, carousel. For the older ones: shooting galleries, "Hit the Hammer" (Hauen-Sie-den-Lukas), dice stalls. The beer tent serves Berlin beer on tap, bratwurst, fries, crêpes, and gingerbread hearts.
The Schollenfest runs for two weeks, usually from a late August Friday to the first Sunday in September. Opening hours are typical for a Volksfest: Mon–Fri 3 PM–10 PM, Sat 2 PM–11 PM, Sun 2 PM–10 PM. Wednesdays are Family Day — many rides at reduced prices, making the market affordable for families with multiple children. Entry to the festival grounds is free — you only pay for what you ride, eat, or drink.
The Reinickendorf borough is home to several traditional Berlin Volksfeste — besides the Schollenfest, there's the Berliner Frühlings-Rummel (Spring Fair) at Kurt-Schumacher-Platz in spring, and the Berliner Herbst-Rummel (Autumn Fair) in autumn. Tegel, as a district, has a particularly village-like character: Tegeler See lake, Tegeler Forst forest, Greenwich Promenade, Hauptstraße with its ice cream parlors and shops — the Schollenfest fits into this vibrant district life and brings thousands of visitors from all over Berlin to the northern borough every late summer.
