Advent in the Forest – Not a Mulled Wine Carousel, but a Campfire
Anyone familiar with Berlin Christmas markets knows the grand productions at Gendarmenmarkt, in Spandau, or at the Rotes Rathaus. The Adventsmarkt im Forstamt Tegel is their opposite: small, rustic, in the forest. The historic Forstamt on Ruppiner Chaussee in Berlin-Tegel is the venue for one day – an Advent Saturday, traditionally the first Advent.
Game Meat, Stick Bread, and Forest Culture
The focus is on the connection to Berlin's forestry. At the stalls, you'll find game sausage, game meat, and game sausages from the Forstamt's own management. Campfires burn outdoors, and children bake their own stick bread on sticks. Advent music plays indoors and outdoors, often with local brass choirs or trombone ensembles.
Crafts and Children's Program
Exhibitors from the region showcase crafts, jewelry, Advent decorations, wool products, and woodwork. In the Forstamt building, there's a children's program with a nature painting workshop and a small exhibition of children's drawings. Advent songs are sung together.
Tegel and the Tegeler Forst
The Tegeler Forst, at 1,200 hectares, is the largest contiguous forest in northern Berlin. The Forstamt is located in the middle of the forest, on Ruppiner Chaussee, which runs between Tegel and Hennigsdorf. Around it: old pines, beeches, oaks, often covered in frost and rime in winter – the perfect backdrop for a quiet Advent day outdoors.
