Parish Church and Wendelin Tradition

The Catholic parish church of St. Wendelinus in Hatzenbühl is the namesake of the market. Saint Wendelin, the patron saint of farmers and shepherds, is an important figure in the Palatinate dialect area. His feast day traditionally falls on October 20th – the church consecration is therefore celebrated in Hatzenbühl in November. The Christmas market builds on this connection between parish, town, and tradition.

Advent Market with Village Character

Unlike larger Advent markets with professional showmen, the St.-Wendelinus Market has a clear village character: Hatzenbühl clubs – the music club, sports club, fire department, carnival society, church community – run the stalls themselves. This volunteer sponsorship ensures fair prices, a family atmosphere, and a strong connection between the market events and the village community.

Palatinate Delights in Advent

Mulled wine from Palatinate vintners, punch, bratwurst, potato pancakes, crepes, fries, sweet baked goods, and winter Palatinate specialties are available at the stands. Artisans offer ceramics, woodwork, jewelry, candles, and small gift items. The selection is manageable but curated with quality.

Hatzenbühl in Advent

Hatzenbühl is known regionally primarily for its large Summer Night Festival and the tobacco-tying competition. The Christmas market on the 3rd Advent weekend is the second central festival of the town and complements the annual program of the Hatzenbühl clubs. For the residents, it is an important meeting point in the pre-Christmas period.
