Three days of festival mile between Stadtplatz and Donaugasse — Anniversary edition for the city's jubilee
Vilshofen was first mentioned in a document in 776 and is celebrating its 1250th city anniversary in 2026. The traditional Stadtfest (city festival) takes on special significance this year: it is the grand anniversary city festival that brings together residents, the surrounding area, and guests from the Danube valley in the historic city center. Especially for the anniversary, the city has launched a commemorative brochure and an expanded program.
Traditionally, the Stadtfest is celebrated on the central Stadtplatz. For the 2026 anniversary edition, the parallel Donaugasse will also be included in the festival mile — a narrow alley between Stadtplatz and the Danube bank, lined with historic townhouses. The result: a "vibrant festival mile full of joie de vivre, music, and culinary highlights," as the city puts it.
Live music will be performed on several stages — local bands from Vilshofen, regional acts from Lower Bavaria, and national cover and party bands. A unique feature of the Donaugasse is the Open Art Gallery: over 20 artists from Vilshofen and Lower Bavaria will exhibit their works along the alley, often working live and interacting with visitors. For families, there is a specially designed Kinderland (children's area) in the Donaugasse with play and craft activities.
Vilshofen is located at the confluence of the Danube, Vils, and Wolfach rivers in the district of Passau — about 25 km west of Passau. With approximately 17,000 inhabitants, it is one of the most beautiful mid-sized centers in Lower Bavaria. The historic old town with its 64 m high city tower, the parish church of St. Johannes, and the baroque Stadtplatz is the venue for the Stadtfest. Its central location on the Danube Cycle Path makes Vilshofen a popular stopover for cycling tourists from all over Europe.
The 2026 anniversary edition is the centerpiece of a year of city celebrations with numerous accompanying events. The Stadtfest itself runs over the weekend of June 12th to 14th and is designed as a holistic experience mile — from the Stadtplatz to the Danube bank.
Several live stages are spread across the Stadtplatz and Donaugasse. Local and regional bands, cover bands, brass music, and acoustic sets alternate. The Open Art Gallery in the Donaugasse is the curatorial highlight of the anniversary edition: artists from Vilshofen and Lower Bavaria display over 20 works in the public space, many are present during the festival and engage in conversations with the audience.
