About Donau in Flammen

Donau in Flammen in Vilshofen is one of the most spectacular pyrotechnic festivals on the Bavarian Danube. Every year on the second weekend in July, the Danube bridge in Vilshofen transforms into a glowing stage of fire for two evenings — pyrotechnicians from Freier Event & Pyro from Altdorf stage an evening-long bridge fireworks display that draws thousands of visitors from Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic to both banks of the Danube. The fireworks are accompanied by a traditional promenade festival with regional and international live music, culinary stands, and special boat trips between Vilshofen and Passau. The highlight is at 10 PM on each of the two festival evenings.

Promenade Festival for Decades

Donau in Flammen in Vilshofen is one of the oldest and most popular pyrotechnic festivals on the Bavarian Danube. Every year on the second weekend in July, the town of Vilshofen on the Danube (a town belonging to the district of Passau, state of Bavaria, 09275) invites you to the promenade festival with a grand bridge fireworks display. Thousands of visitors travel from the Bavarian Forest, from Upper Austria, and from South Bohemia — the event has a distinctly international character that reflects Vilshofen's location at the Danube tri-border area.

Danube Bridge as a Stage

What makes Donau in Flammen unique: the pyrotechnics are fired not from a raft or platform, but directly from the Vilshofen Danube bridge. The entire bridge structure becomes a stage for fireworks that bathe the river between the two banks in glowing colors. For this, the Danube bridge is closed to traffic from 9:50 PM to 10:30 PM — a logistical effort that underscores the event's importance for Vilshofen.

Freier Event & Pyro from Altdorf

The pyrotechnic concept has been provided for years by Freier Event & Pyro from Altdorf in Lower Bavaria — one of the most distinguished pyrotechnics companies in Southern Germany. Every year, the fireworks are given a new, secret motto, which is only revealed at the grand finale. The choreography is musically synchronized.

Special Boat Trips Wurm + Noé

The shipping company Wurm + Noé offers its own special boat trips for Donau in Flammen — departures from both Vilshofen and Passau. The ships anchor on the Danube during the fireworks, allowing guests to experience the pyrotechnic highlight directly from the water. The special boat trips have been in such high demand for years that they are usually sold out weeks in advance — early reservation through the shipping company (Tel. 0851 929292) is essential.

Danube Promenade and Festival Operations

Parallel to the fireworks, there is a festival atmosphere on the Danube promenades on both banks with regional and international bands, catering stands, arts and crafts, and family activities. The town center of Vilshofen is located directly on the Danube — the transition from the town festival to the promenade festival is seamless. A Lower Bavarian festival culture with international Danube flair.

Donau in Flammen — edition 2026

Donau in Flammen 2026 takes place on July 10th and 11th, the second weekend in July. On both evenings, the Vilshofen Danube bridge will be the stage for spectacular bridge fireworks starting at 10 PM — choreographed by the pyrotechnics company Freier Event & Pyro from Altdorf. Festival operations with live music and catering on the Danube promenades on both banks. Special boat trips by the Wurm + Noé shipping company from Vilshofen and Passau (advance reservation required).

Donau in Flammen 2026 — Two Pyrotechnic Nights on the Danube

On Friday, July 10th, and Saturday, July 11th, 2026, the Vilshofen Danube bridge will once again transform into a glowing pyrotechnic stage. Donau in Flammen — one of Bavaria's most renowned bridge fireworks displays — attracts thousands of visitors from Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic to both banks of the Danube every year.

The pyrotechnicians from Freier Event & Pyro from Altdorf are preparing another spectacular program for 2026. The motto remains strictly secret until the grand finale. Festival operations on the Danube promenade start in the late afternoon, and the bridge fireworks begin at 10 PM each night.
