Traditional Easter Fire at Salbke Lake in southern Magdeburg
The Easter Fire is one of the oldest spring customs in German-speaking countries – presumably pre-Christian, later interpreted by the church as a symbol of Christ's resurrection. Today, it is primarily an occasion for neighborly conviviality. In Salbke, a district in southern Magdeburg, the Salbke, Westerhüsen, Fermersleben Civic Association organizes the annual Salbke Easter Fire – listed as the 16th edition in the Magdeburg Local and District Calendar 2026.
The venue is the parking lot at Unterhorstweg, directly on Salbke Lake – one of the characteristic bodies of water in southern Magdeburg, created by gravel and sand extraction. On Maundy Thursday, April 2, 2026, starting at 6:30 PM, the woodpile will be lit, and the fire will burn until around 10:00 PM. Admission is free. There will be a small beer stand, bratwurst, and mulled wine for the cooler hours.
Salbke, Westerhüsen, and Fermersleben are three old industrial villages in southern Magdeburg, incorporated into Magdeburg in the 1950s. The joint civic association preserves the historical identity and organizes district festivals, lectures, and the major spring highlight throughout the year: the Easter Fire. It has a permanent place in the Local and District Calendar 2026.
The state capital Magdeburg in the state of Saxony-Anhalt stretches along the Elbe River – and the south is particularly scenic, with its lakes, meadows, and sports areas. Those who visit the Easter Fire can conclude the day with a hike around Salbke Lake or along the Elbe riverbank. In the context of the district, the Easter Fire is a casual event – not a mass event, but a neighborhood celebration with an open character.
The Easter Fire has been held in this form for years – noted as the 16th edition in the Local and District Calendar for 2026. The city of Magdeburg has listed the event as one of the 24 Easter Fires approved for 2026.
