Münsterland Advent Classic

The Sternschnuppenmarkt Emsdetten has been the city's central Advent market for two decades – in 2026, it celebrates its 20th edition. The organizer is the Verkehrsverein Emsdetten (Emsdetten Tourist Association), which has developed the format over the years into one of the most distinctive Advent markets in the Münsterland region. Unlike the large markets in Münster or Osnabrück, the Sternschnuppenmarkt remains approachable, village-like, with a clear religious anchor at the historic parish church.

Dates 2026 – December 4th to 6th

The 2026 edition runs from Friday, December 4th to Sunday, December 6th (St. Nicholas' Day falls on Sunday). The market thus takes place on the first weekend of the full Advent month. Confirmed by the Verkehrsverein Emsdetten and Münsterland.com.

Venue Pankratiuskirche

The venue is the city center area around St. Pankratiuskirche: Kirchstraße, Frauenstraße, and Brink. Around 60 wooden stalls are grouped in two small markets, with the large Christmas tree in the center. Pankratiuskirche itself becomes an "open church" – visitors can enter during the market, light candles, and experience the Advent atmosphere within the church architecture.

Program – Stage, Santa Claus, and Tower Brass

The program follows a clearly defined choreography:

• Stadtwerke Emsdetten Stage – continuous live performances: Children's choirs, men's choir, women's choir, brass bands, school orchestras.
• Santa Claus Visit – Saturday, December 5th, and Sunday, December 6th (St. Nicholas' Day), from 3 PM to 6 PM daily in a decorated carriage, with gifts for the children.
• Tower Brass Concert – Brass concert from the balcony of Pankratiuskirche for the opening and closing – an acoustic trademark of the market.
• Open Church – Special opening of St. Pankratius.
• Christmas Tree Sales at the End – the decorated Christmas trees from the market are sold, with proceeds going to the city's environmental projects.

Culinary Delights

The market stalls offer the classic Münsterland Advent assortment: Glühwein (mulled wine), Feuerzangenbowle (mulled wine with rum), Bratwurst (grilled sausage), Reibeplätzchen (potato pancakes), Waffles, candied almonds, cheese, gingerbread, stollen. In addition, arts and crafts and gift items.

Extended Shop Opening Hours

During the Sternschnuppenmarkt, the shops in Emsdetten city center have extended opening hours: Friday-Saturday until 6 PM, Sunday from 1 PM to 6 PM. The combination of market + shopping makes the Sternschnuppenmarkt a day-trip destination.
