40 showmen, 'The Beast' and 'Fire Ball' around the Pankratiuskirche in the heart of Münsterland
The Maikirmes Emsdetten opens every year at the beginning of May with its opening on Labor Day. In 2026, the stalls will be spread across Frauenstraße, Sandufer, Schulstraße, and the adjacent areas around the Pankratiuskirche, which, with its striking tower, marks the heart of Emsdetten's old town. The nearby market infrastructure, the Sande stream, and the city center's pedestrian zone form the backdrop.
In 2026, over 40 showmen will be participating. Highlights include several large thrill rides: 'The Beast' as a free-fall tower, the spectacular 'Fire Ball', and the family roller coaster 'Tom der Tiger'. Specially for the little ones, the children's attraction 'Happy Clown' will be set up. In addition, there will be classic fair elements: bumper cars, a Ferris wheel, carousels, shooting galleries, lottery stands, gingerbread stalls, and of course, pea soup from the shooting club.
The opening will take place on Friday, May 1st, 2026, at 3 PM on Frauenstraße in front of the Pankratiuskirche. Opening hours: Fri 3 PM–11 PM, Sat 2 PM–11 PM, Sun 11 AM–10 PM. Deliberately no fireworks: 'Fireworks will be permanently omitted due to global war events,' explains the city administration – a remarkable statement that could influence other Volksfeste in North Rhine-Westphalia.
For the fair period, Frauenstraße, Sandufer, and Schulstraße will be closed from April 27th to May 4th, 2026. The weekly market will be relocated to the station forecourt during this time (on April 29th and May 2nd). The city is working closely with residents, the Pankratius parish, and the showmen to ensure the central location of the fair works without overly disrupting the daily lives of residents.
Emsdetten is located in the Steinfurt district in Münsterland (state of North Rhine-Westphalia) and has around 36,000 inhabitants. The city, formerly heavily influenced by the textile industry, today stands for a diverse medium-sized economy and a dense club life. The Maikirmes is the most popular of the city's festivals; it brings together what is otherwise spread across several city districts in school, work, and club life.
The event is organized by the City of Emsdetten. The fair extends across Frauenstraße, Sandufer, and Schulstraße. From April 27th to May 4th, 2026, these streets will be closed to through traffic. The weekly market on April 29th and May 2nd will be relocated to the station forecourt.
