Palatinate Grand Kerwe with festival tent, amusement park, beer tapping and live music – always around the 4th Sunday in August
The Mutterstadt Tent Kerwe is synonymous with Palatinate festival culture in its most pronounced form. With its fixed date on the weekend of the 4th Sunday in August, it has been drawing visitors from the entire Rhine-Neckar region to Mutterstadt for over four decades, conveniently located between Ludwigshafen and Speyer. 2026 marks the 45th edition of the festival.
The large festival tent at the Neue Pforte parking lot can accommodate several thousand guests and is the heart of the Kerwe. Here, the traditional Fassbieranstich (beer tapping) by the mayor takes place on the opening evening – a ritual that marks the official opening of the Kerwe. On the following days, various bands and DJs provide a lively festival tent atmosphere with Palatinate classics, Schlager, pop, and cover songs. Waitresses in traditional costume serve draft festival beer, roast chicken, pork knuckles, bratwurst, and Palatinate specialties such as Saumagen (pig's stomach stuffed with pork, potatoes, and marjoram), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), and Palatinate Riesling.
On the neighboring fairground in Turnhallenstraße, the amusement park extends with rides for all ages: bumper cars, Ferris wheel, carousel, swing boat, loopings, and many other attractions. Snack stands with bratwurst, crêpes, candied almonds, gingerbread hearts, and cotton candy complete the folk festival offerings. Shooting galleries, lottery stalls, and skill games are also present.
With just under 13,000 inhabitants, Mutterstadt is one of the most populous municipalities in the Rhein-Pfalz district. The municipality was first mentioned in a document in 767, boasting a history of over 1,250 years. Today, Mutterstadt is primarily known as a residential community in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. The Tent Kerwe is one of the most important community-defining events and enjoys supra-regional fame.
The 2026 edition marks the 45th anniversary of the Mutterstadt Tent Kerwe, underscoring the festival's importance to the community. For four days, Mutterstadt offers a festival program that covers the entire spectrum of Palatinate folk festival culture: from the traditional beer tapping and live music in the festival tent to the colorful amusement park. The close integration between the festival tent and the amusement park – both within walking distance – makes the Mutterstadt Tent Kerwe a perfect folk festival for all ages.
