Five balmy summer evenings on the market square of the Bartenwetzerstadt
The Feierabend-Treff Melsungen is what many small towns wish for and few manage to achieve: a regular, accessible market square event designed to liven up the town center and actually bring people together. Once a month – always on the second Tuesday – the city's city management sets up market stalls, a small stage, and seating in the Marktplatz (market square), the surrounding shops stay open, and from 5 PM, a band or solo artist plays.
The Feierabend-Treff runs from 4 PM to 8 PM. Those who come after work will find a changing selection of regional specialties, international cuisine, and creative street food – the city specifically seeks out market stalls for this – along with beer, wine, and soft drinks. Live music starts at 5 PM and continues into the evening. The spectrum is broad: reggae, acoustic pop and rock covers, soul, German-language singer-songwriters. Admission is free.
Melsungen, the Bartenwetzerstadt (Ax-Whetter Town), is located on the Fulda river in the Schwalm-Eder district. The medieval market square with its Renaissance town hall and dense half-timbered facades is the stage for the Feierabend-Treff – there's hardly a better place imaginable for an evening summer festival. Around it: the Kaufunger Forest, the Fulda river as a destination for hikers and cyclists, no mass tourism, but a self-confident cityscape with its own identity.
The format is not a one-off event, but a season. Five dates between May and September structure the summer in the city center. Those who come once typically come again – that is the city's goal. The dates for 2026 are set early, and the music program was already published in the spring.
The season opener was originally planned for May 12, 2026, but was postponed by a week to May 19 due to weather conditions – with reggae artist André George as the opening act, who was also part of the new date. A small episode that shows: the format is flexible, and the city reacts pragmatically.
