Three-day civic festival with the motto 'Celebrating Together – Changing Together'
Gudensberg, located on the edge of the Habichtswald low mountain range in the North Hessian Schwalm-Eder district, has around 9,500 inhabitants. The town centre is a well-preserved ensemble of half-timbered buildings with a market square, historic town hall, and narrow streets that cluster around the striking castle hill. The Wenzelsburg once stood on the castle hill – today, the Obernkirche church dominates the townscape. It is in this setting that the Gudensberg City Festival takes place every two years.
Unlike annual city festivals, Gudensberg opts for a two-year format with programmatic focuses. This rhythm allows for more intensive preparation and varying thematic accents. Possible focus themes for future years include 'Music and Sounds', 'Cultures and Diversity', or 'Fit and Active' – giving each city festival its own distinct character.
The motto for the 2026 edition is 'Celebrating Together – Changing Together' and places the theme of sustainability at its core. This focus shapes the programme in several ways: it features vendors from regional agriculture and food crafts, reusable systems are used comprehensively, and the main stage alternates between concerts and talks on climate protection and social change.
The central festival stage is traditionally located at the Töpfenmarkt – one of the historic squares in the town centre. Over the three days, various regional bands, school choirs, and dance groups perform here. Additionally, several clubs operate smaller stages in side streets and courtyards, transforming the entire town centre into a festival zone.
As is customary for a North Hessian city festival, catering by local clubs is a core part of the event. From the shooting club to the fire brigade, local groups run stalls and use the festival to raise funds for their organisations. The programme appeals to all generations: children's activities during the day, bands and DJs in the evening, an ecumenical service on Sunday, and Sunday shopping with promotions from town centre retailers.
The 2026 edition is the next biennial Gudensberg City Festival and places the theme of sustainability at its core. The programme and schedule will be published in detail on the city's website in early summer 2026.
