A Day with the Animals — Feedings, Falconry Displays, Mandrill Talk, and Live Music
The Neunkirchen Zoo Festival is the annual highlight event of the Neunkirchen Zoo — one of the most traditional zoos in Saarland, existing since 1932. On the first Sunday in September, the zoo transforms into an experience zone where animals are the focus, keepers show their work, and visitors can experience zoo life in a way not possible on a daily basis.
Throughout the day, commented feedings take place — for the mandrills, penguins, cheetahs, and meerkats. The zoo keepers talk about the animals' daily lives, explain their needs, personalities, and relationships. Those who have never watched a giraffe eat breakfast or observed a penguin catch fish will discover a different side of the zoo here.
A special highlight is the talk by Dr. Norbert Fritsch, the zoo director — dedicated to the mandrills, one of the zoo's attractions. These colorful primates are among the zoo's most impressive animals, and Fritsch shares firsthand insights into their behavior, breeding, and conservation in the wild.
Twice a day, falconry flight demonstrations take place — impressive birds of prey showcase their aerial skills. Additionally, the zoo school team presents the zoo's three Icelandic horses, with interactive experiences where children can pet and feed the animals.
The Lyra Eschringen Music Club provides the musical atmosphere, playing live at the zoo school. Classical brass music, light entertainment, the full repertoire of a Saarland music club. Additionally, the zoo association offers homemade cakes, the food service is open all day, and cooperating associations present their work.
The Neunkirchen Zoo is located on the outskirts of the district town of Neunkirchen, in the Neunkirchen district of Saarland. With around 500 animals on 18 hectares, it is one of the larger zoos in the state. The city itself has about 47,000 inhabitants and positions itself with the slogan 'The City to Live In' — a nod to its transformation from a mining and steel town to a modern regional center with a high quality of life.
