Marching of the Schützenbruderschaft St. Peter & St. Paul on Lindenstraße — 261 years of Schützen tradition, Saturday, July 4, 2026
The Schützenbruderschaft St. Peter & St. Paul Schöppingen was founded in 1765, making it one of the oldest Schützenbruderschaften in the Münsterland region. In 2026, it celebrates its 261st year as a club — six generations of Schützen tradition, a religious brotherhood, and a growing community life in the small municipality of Schöppingen in the Borken district. The annual Schützenfest takes place on the first weekend of July — in 2026, with the main assembly on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at 1:00 PM on Lindenstraße.
The highlight of the festival: the assembly of the Schützenbruderschaft on Lindenstraße. The marksmen gather in full uniform — Schützen jacket, Schützen hat, feathers, sabers, Schützen sashes. The reigning Schützenkönig (King) assembles with the board, brief speeches are given, then the march to the Schützenplatz (fairgrounds).
After the assembly, the parade proceeds through the central streets of Schöppingen, accompanied by brass band music and festively dressed spectators along the houses. The Schützenbruderschaft is joined by friendly clubs from neighboring communities.
The Königsschießen (King Shooting) at the Schützenplatz determines the new Schützenkönig — whoever brings down the wooden bird with the last shot. The King Proclamation, with the enthronement of the new royal couple, takes place afterward in the festival tent.
The festival evening with dance music, catering, and the King's Dance marks the end of the festive day. The community — about 7,500 inhabitants — flocks to the festival tent; visitors from surrounding communities are welcome.
St. Peter & St. Paul is the final organizer of the Schöppingen Schützenfest season: other brotherhoods from the districts (Gemen, among others) celebrate their festivals in the preceding weeks — St. Peter & St. Paul provides the festive season finale.
Schützenbruderschaften like St. Peter & St. Paul were originally religious brotherhoods with social and military-protective functions. Today, they are cultural heirs of this tradition — Schützenmesse (marksmen's mass), patron saint's festival, community life with a Catholic accent. This makes the Schützenfest more than just a Volksfest: a celebration of identity and faith for the community.
Schöppingen is a municipality in the Borken district, in western Münsterland, about 30 kilometers west of Münster. With just under 7,500 inhabitants, it is a typical rural community in Münsterland with a rural character, active club culture, and an impressive number of Schützenbruderschaften. Known for Schöppingen Castle (artist residency) and the Münsterland park landscape.
