Münsterland Christmas Market with Nativity Scene Exhibition on the First Advent Weekend in Legden
The Legden Christmas Market, with the beautiful motto "St. Brigida Shines," is the Advent market of the Münsterland municipality of Legden. On the first Advent weekend of 2026, i.e., November 28th and 29th, 2026, the historic town center around the St. Brigida parish church and the neighboring Dahlia Garden transforms into a Christmas world with thousands of lights, festively decorated stalls, and a special Nativity scene exhibition.
What makes the Legden Christmas Market special is its setting:
The Nativity scene exhibition in St. Brigida is one of the market's special features — it showcases dozens of historical and modern nativity scenes from Germany and abroad at the start of Advent, often with an option to donate to local church projects.
The market stalls are stocked by associations, local craftspeople, and direct marketers from the Münsterland region — wood crafts, knitwear, candles, honey, jam, regional sausage and cheese specialties. Mulled wine variations, Feuerzangenbowle (a rum-based punch), bratwurst, Schmalzbrot (lard bread), and sweet stalls characterize the catering.
Legden is a small municipality in the Borken district (North Rhine-Westphalia) with around 7,000 inhabitants. It is located in the western Münsterland, near the Dutch border. Legden has been known for decades as "Dahliendorf" (Dahlia Village) — the dahlia collection show garden attracts thousands of visitors in late summer. The Christmas market cleverly continues this marketing: those who see dahlias in the summer return for the Nativity scene exhibition in Advent.
The first Advent weekend is traditionally the most important market date in Westphalia — many smaller markets (like the one in Legden) concentrate on this weekend before "Christmas market tourism" shifts to the big cities. If you want to experience Christmas without mass tourism, this is the place to be.

Combine your market visit with a short trip to the Dahlia Garden — even in November, a walk through the illuminated grounds is worthwhile. It's often cool and damp in the Münsterland in November: hat, scarf, and warm shoes are advisable.
