Legden — Germany's "Dahlia Village"
Legden is a municipality in the Borken district in western Münsterland, with around 8,000 inhabitants. It is characterized by agriculture, family businesses, and a unique feature: the cultivation and care of the dahlia. For decades, Legden has been known as the "Dahliendorf" (Dahlia Village) — this vibrant summer flower adorns gardens, front yards, the entire village, and most importantly, the grand parade that transforms the village into a floral spectacle every three years.
100 Years of Parade — A German Uniqueness
The first Blumenkorso Legden took place in 1926. Since then, the event has evolved into Germany's only parade of its kind: a parade where the floats are exclusively decorated with dahlias. While other flower parades are held in the Netherlands, Belgium, or Northern Italy, Legden remains unrivaled in Germany. The three-year cycle makes the parade an exceptional event: preparation, cultivation, care, and float construction require significant time, and an annual event would be logistically and horticulturally unfeasible.
2026 Program — Anniversary Edition
The festival day on Sunday, September 20, 2026, begins at 11:00 AM with a morning reception, a celebratory mass, and performances by traditional costume groups, shooting clubs' bands, and dance groups from across the region. The highlight is the parade starting at 2:30 PM: approximately 24 floats, each adorned with tens of thousands of dahlias (a total of about 1 million blooms), followed by 450 children in costume, equestrians, historical groups, and marching bands. The floats are decorated with the blooms the day before — a monumental effort by volunteer helpers from the entire village. The festival day continues until 10:00 PM with live music, a marquee program, and fireworks.
Logistics and Grandstands
Up to 450,000 spectators are expected throughout the day — an immense number for a town of 8,000 inhabitants. The main grandstand at the central parade square is already sold out for 2026. Side grandstand tickets are available online. Those without grandstand tickets can find freely accessible spots along the parade route — it is recommended to arrive early to secure standing room. Park-and-ride options with shuttle buses from surrounding communities are available.
Anniversary Gala October 3, 2026
For the 100th anniversary, the municipality is hosting a special event on October 3, 2026 (7:00 PM–11:00 PM): "100 Years of Blumenkorso — Gala at Dorf Münsterland" — an evening program looking back at the past century, featuring performances by former parade queens and a keynote speech on the history of the parade. This is a second highlight for those who couldn't attend the main parade or wish to fully experience the anniversary year.
Legden and the Borken District as a Destination
Visitors attending the parade should also explore the western Münsterland region: Vreden with its Hamaland Museum, Burgsteinfurt with its water castle, Bocholt with its textile museum, and the Hohe Mark nature park. Legden itself is worth a visit even outside of parade years: enjoy the Dahlia exhibition in late summer, the well-maintained town center, and the regional Münsterland cuisine. During parade years, accommodation should be booked well in advance — the region is in high demand.
