Advent magic in the Hohenlohe spa town — two Advent weekends in the city center
The Hohenlohe spa town of Bad Mergentheim (around 24,000 inhabitants, Main-Tauber district) is famous throughout the year for its healing springs, its waters discovered in 1826, and its history as the residence of the Teutonic Order. In Advent, the old town with its market square, main street, Schlossplatz, and Gänsmarkt transforms into a contemplative Christmas space — with small market stalls, illuminated trees, and atmospheric glittering lights.
The main Christmas market will take place in 2026 on two weekends:
Open daily from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with gastronomy open until 10:00 PM. The concept of two weekends — with a weekday break in between — is relatively unusual and gives the market a clearly contemplative, non-touristy character. Regular visitors from the region often come by on both weekends.
Unlike the large tourist Christmas markets, Bad Mergentheim focuses on handmade products: wooden turnings, ceramics, wooden toys, carvings, pottery, leather goods, felt goods, honey products. The exhibitors are mainly regional craftsmen and hobby artists from the Main-Tauber district, Hohenlohe Land, the Tauber Valley, and the Würzburg region. Mass-produced goods are the exception — making the market a hidden gem for special Christmas gifts.
For refreshments, there is mulled wine (Tauberwein-Glühwein as a specialty!), hot apple punch, children's punch, roasted almonds, crêpes, bratwurst, mulled wine pretzels, and Tauberland specialties such as Hohenlohe Maultaschen or Schaftaler. In addition, there are stalls selling Christmas decorations: straw stars, blown glass baubles from Lauscha, nativity scenes, Advent arrangements, small gifts.
Even before the first Advent, the Christmas Market in the Bad Mergentheim Kurhaus opens as an atmospheric prelude from November 27 to 29, 2026. In the historic Kurhaus hall, selected artisans present their work on two floors, complemented by café service in the Wandelgang. This combination — kick-off in the Kurhaus, main market in the old town — has proven successful for years and makes Bad Mergentheim a special Advent destination.
Visitors to the Christmas market can easily combine their stay with spa treatments at Solymar (Sole-Therme), a stroll through the Wandelhalle, or a visit to the Deutschordensschloss (Teutonic Order Castle) — Bad Mergentheim offers a soothing mix of wellness, culture, and Advent atmosphere in winter. Hotels in the city center and the spa district often offer Advent packages.
The two weekends in the city center — Market Square and Main Street — will feature handmade products and atmospheric catering. Mulled wine from Tauberwein, Hohenlohe specialties, Advent music, and glittering lights form the framework.
The kick-off format in the Kurhaus over three days (Nov 27–29) is a special way for selected artisans to present their works in the historic Kurhaus hall. Accompanying program with café concerts and readings.
Free admission to all markets. Food, drinks, and handcrafted goods at usual prices.
You can reach Bad Mergentheim via the A 81 motorway (exit Tauberbischofsheim or Bad Mergentheim, 10 km each) and the B 290. By train: Bad Mergentheim station on the Tauberbahn (Würzburg–Stuttgart), about a 10-minute walk to the city center.
