Bad Mergentheim — Advent Magic in the Spa Town

The Hohenlohe spa town of Bad Mergentheim (approx. 24,000 inhabitants, Main-Tauber-Kreis) is famous year-round for its healing springs, its waters discovered in 1826, and its history as the residence of the Teutonic Order. During Advent, the old town, including the market square, main street, castle square, and Gänsmarkt, transforms into a contemplative Christmas setting — complete with charming stalls, illuminated trees, and a festive glow.

Two Advent Weekends in the Heart of Town

The main Christmas market will take place over two weekends in 2026:

• Thursday, December 3 to Sunday, December 6, 2026 (2nd Advent weekend)
• Thursday, December 10 to Sunday, December 13, 2026 (3rd Advent weekend)

Open daily from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with food and drink stalls open until 10:00 PM. This two-weekend concept — with a break during the work week — is quite unique, giving the market a distinctly peaceful, non-touristy character. Regular visitors from the region often return for both weekends.

Artisan Christmas Market

Unlike large tourist-focused Christmas markets, Bad Mergentheim prioritizes handcrafted products: woodturning, ceramics, wooden toys, carvings, pottery, leather goods, felt items, and honey products. The exhibitors are primarily local artisans and hobbyists from the Main-Tauber-Kreis, the Hohenlohe region, the Tauber Valley, and the Würzburg area. Mass-produced goods are the exception, making this market a hidden gem for finding unique Christmas gifts.

Mulled Wine and Christmas Decorations

For refreshments, enjoy Glühwein (the local Tauber wine mulled specialty!), hot apple punch, children's punch, roasted almonds, crêpes, bratwurst, mulled wine pretzels, and Tauberland specialties like Hohenlohe Maultaschen or Schaftaler. You will also find stalls selling Christmas decorations: straw stars, hand-blown glass baubles from Lauscha, wooden nativity scenes, Advent arrangements, and small gifts.

As a festive prelude, the Christmas market in the Bad Mergentheim Kurhaus opens before the first Advent, from November 27 to 29, 2026. Selected artisans present their work in the grand Kurhaus hall, complemented by café service in the Kurpark foyer. This combination — the Kurhaus kick-off followed by the main market in the old town — has been a proven success for years, making Bad Mergentheim a special Advent destination.
