Schriesheim — the wine and festival town
Schriesheim, with just under 15,000 inhabitants on the northern Bergstraße between Heidelberg and Weinheim, is one of Baden-Württemberg's oldest wine-growing towns. The town lives to the rhythm of its two major festivals throughout the year: the Mathaisemarkt in March (one of the largest folk festivals in Northern Baden) and the street festival with flea market on the first weekend of September. While the Mathaisemarkt is more of a festival tent and amusement park, the street festival thrives on wine, the flea market, and the old town atmosphere around the castle, market square, and the old Bergstraße.
450 flea market stalls on Saturday
The flea market on Saturday is the undisputed magnet: Around 450 stalls occupy the streets of Schriesheim's old town — from Heidelberger Straße via the market square up to Bergstraße. Early risers can start hunting for the best bargains from 5 a.m., with the main activity running all morning into the afternoon. Antiques, furniture, books, records, jewelry, toys, tools, children's clothing — if you're looking, you'll find it. It is one of the largest flea markets in Northern Baden and attracts seekers from Mannheim, Heidelberg, Weinheim, and the entire region.
Wine villages, jazz in the Oberstadt
While the flea market dominates on Saturday, wine is the theme for all three days. Several wine villages liven up the old town: Schriesheim's vintners and friendly wineries from the Palatinate and Kraichgau regions serve Riesling, Spätburgunder, Trollinger, and Lemberger, along with regional bread and meat specialties. Several stages will feature live bands, singer-songwriters, and cover bands. A special feature: in the Oberstadt around the St. Mariä Himmelfahrt church, high-quality jazz is regularly on the program — Modern Jazz, Swing, Latin, sometimes classical-jazz crossover. A rather quiet, high-quality alternative to the hustle and bustle further down.
Amusement park and Sunday shopping
On the festival grounds on the outskirts of town, there are funfair rides and carousels — Ferris wheel, bumper cars, chain flyers, children's train. There are also food stalls, sweets, and drinks here. Sunday is a shopping day in Schriesheim's stores — the town center is bustling with flea market remnants, wine villages, and shopping. The festival winds down a bit more quietly on Monday, but is still ongoing. The Schriesheim Street Festival is not the largest city festival in the region, but it is one of the most characteristic — a true wine town celebrating itself, with the charm of a compact old town and a mix of folk festival, flea market, and wine festival that is rarely found elsewhere.
