Carnival festival in the wineries and vineyards of Zell an der Mosel with wine, music, and revelry
“Karneval im Weingarten” (Carnival in the Vineyard) in Zell an der Mosel is a special form of Fastnacht (carnival) that combines Rhenish carnival tradition with Mosel wine culture. Instead of taking place in a hall or on the street, the revelry happens in the wineries, wine shops, and vineyards of the wine-growing town of Zell – one of the most famous wine regions on the Mosel, renowned for its “Schwarze Katz”.
In 2026, the event will take place on Saturday, February 14th (Karnevalssamstag). Carnival-goers will move from winery to winery, tasting wines, celebrating in the wine shops, and enjoying a unique wine-carnival experience in the Mosel Valley.
Zell is a traditional wine-growing town on the Lower Mosel and home to one of the most famous German wine brands: “Zeller Schwarze Katz”. The vineyard area encompasses several plots around Zell and has been synonymous with Mosel wine at home and abroad for decades. The wine town thrives on wine, tourism, and the Mosel River.
The Rhenish carnival tradition is also strongly anchored on the Mosel. While Cologne, Mainz, and Düsseldorf attract media attention, the Mosel villages cherish their own Fastnacht with unique characteristics and a connection to wine culture. “Karneval im Weingarten” is one of these peculiarities: here, carnival is deliberately moved into the wineries and combined with wine, music, and conviviality.
The event combines carnival tradition with wine tourism. Several wineries open their wine shops, courtyards, or even vineyards for a carnival program. Live music, DJs, carnival hits, and communal singing create the atmosphere. Mosel wine, and especially the “Schwarze Katz”, are the focus of the hospitality, complemented by beer and hearty food.
The combination of carnival and wine on the Mosel is not a contradiction but a logical consequence: both are expressions of Rhenish joie de vivre, both have deep roots in regional culture, and both are celebrated in community. “Karneval im Weingarten” brings these two worlds together, creating a unique festival experience in the Mosel Valley.
