One of the largest city-centre funfairs in the region — Rheydt Market Square + Gracht, in September
Until 1975, Rheydt was an independent, self-governing city. Today, it is the most populous district of Mönchengladbach, retaining its own city centre with a market square, town hall, and pedestrian zone. This distinct identity is reflected in its annual Volksfeste: The Große Rheydter Spätkirmes is not a side event of Mönchengladbach, but Rheydt's own major Volksfest — one of the two annual highlights on the district's event calendar (its sister event, the Rheydter Frühkirmes, runs from May 8th-11th, 2026).
The 2026 Spätkirmes takes place from September 18th to 21st — Friday to Monday. This four-day rhythm is classic for Lower Rhine funfairs and allows for different atmospheres depending on the day of the week:
What sets this funfair apart from smaller district Kirmessen is its size: it spans two central squares:
This dual location allows for a true 'festival mile' experience — visitors can stroll from one square to the other, compare rides, and sample different food.
The Rheydter Spätkirmes is classic Lower Rhine Volksfest culture: loud, colourful, diverse, and enjoyed by all generations. Unlike glossy big-city funfairs, the local audience predominates here — Rheydt residents with their families, friend groups from surrounding districts, and regular visitors from the nearby Dutch border region. Ride prices are moderate, the beer tent is not overcrowded, and the proportion of children remains high on Sundays.
Anyone looking for a more authentic, less staged funfair atmosphere — and wanting to discover Mönchengladbach beyond its Borussia stadium identity — should visit the Rheydter Spätkirmes. This is classic West Germany, a blend of coal mining and Karneval, tradition and hustle and bustle.
Friday, September 18th to Monday, September 21st, 2026. Usual opening hours: Weekdays 2:00 PM to 12:00 AM, Weekends 11:00 AM to 12:00 AM. Exact times will be published in August 2026.
Rheydt Market Square + Gracht Car Park, 41236 Mönchengladbach-Rheydt. By car via the A52 or A61 (exit MG-Rheydt). By public transport: Mönchengladbach-Rheydt station is right in the district centre (RE train stop), a 5-minute walk from there.
Entry to the fairgrounds is free. Rides cost between €2 (children's rides) and €8 (thrill rides), depending on the operator. Food and beer tent prices are standard funfair rates.
