Summer evening at Rathausplatz — Markdorf clubs, wine, and the Witch's Tower
The Stadtfest Markdorf is a consciously small, cozy summer festival: not a large-scale Volksfest (public festival), but an evening where the town of Markdorf, together with its clubs, takes over the Rathausplatz. The festival program begins at 8 PM, with local clubs — music clubs, sports clubs, church communities, social associations — serving regional specialties and, above all, Markdorf wine from behind their pavilions. The atmosphere is familial: you meet neighbors, sit at long tables on a warm June evening, and watch the musicians and actors.
Markdorf belongs to the Lake Constance wine-growing region — one of Europe's northernmost wine regions with surprisingly high-quality Weißburgunder, Müller-Thurgau, and Spätburgunder. The Markdorf vintners serve their vintages at the Stadtfest; you can sample the manageable but high-quality selection. The wine is one of the festival's trademarks and distinguishes it from many other town festivals in the region.
The Rathaus stage features music groups from Markdorf and the Lake Constance area: acoustic acts, cover bands, choirs. Theatre groups present short scenes, and the children's program provides entertainment for the youngest visitors. A special feature: the Hexenturm, a historic town tower of Markdorf, opens for tours during the festival — an opportunity to explore the medieval town history. On Sunday morning at 10 AM, an ecumenical service gathers everyone in front of the town hall.
Markdorf is a town of just under 14,000 inhabitants in the Bodenseekreis district, located between Friedrichshafen, Überlingen, and Meersburg. The medieval townscape with its town hall (half-timbered), Hexenturm, and old alleys, the apple cultivation in the surrounding area, and its proximity to Lake Constance characterize the place. Markdorf is connected to Friedrichshafen and Singen via the Bodenseegürtelbahn (Lake Constance Belt Railway).
