Tip
Combine with the Great Christmas Caroling in mid-December (date for 2026 to be published by MGMG) – one of the most beautiful moments of the season on Rheydt's market square.
Advent Experience in Rheydt's Market Square
The Weihnachtsmarkt Rheydt is one of Mönchengladbach's two major Advent markets. While the Mönchengladbach city market on Sonnenhausplatz occupies the urban center, the Rheydt market is the Advent counterpart in the district of Rheydt – an independent, formerly urban district that was incorporated into Mönchengladbach in 1975 and has retained its own character to this day.
Rheydt Market Square – A Recognizable Backdrop
The venue is Rheydt Market Square, a classic Central European town square featuring the distinctive Rheydt Town Hall (the district's landmark) and a continuous historic facade. During Advent, the square is adorned with light installations, fir trees, market stalls, and a Christmas carousel – the atmosphere is classic and compact, making it intensely atmospheric.
Market Operations and Great Christmas Caroling
The market is open daily from 11 AM to 10 PM, Fridays and Saturdays until 11 PM, Christmas Eve until 2 PM, closed on Totensonntag (Sunday of the Dead) and on December 1st and 2nd.
The highlight of the season is the Großes Weihnachtssingen (Great Christmas Caroling), traditionally held in mid/late December (in 2025 on December 18th, 6–8 PM), where the entire Rheydt city center joins in singing Christmas carols – a community event that transforms the market from an anonymous shopping venue into a district festival."Rheydt schmückt sich" (Rheydt Decorates Itself) Campaign
The Christmas market is integrated into the district campaign "Rheydt schmückt sich": Shops, cafes, and facades in the city center are decorated for Christmas, making the entire downtown area shine in Advent light. This transforms Rheydt into a cohesive Advent ensemble for six weeks – not just the market square.
Rheydt – A District with its Own Identity
With around 60,000 inhabitants, Rheydt is the most populous district of Mönchengladbach and was an independent major city on the Lower Rhine until 1975. The district has its own cityscape, its own pedestrian zone (Hauptstraße), and a vibrant retail offering. The Rheydt city center has been the focus of urban renewal projects for years – the Christmas market is part of the strategy to strengthen the Rheydt city center as an experience space.
Lower Rhine Tradition
Like many Lower Rhine Christmas markets, the Rheydt market offers a mix of classic German Advent offerings (mulled wine, potato pancakes, bratwurst, candied almonds) and Lower Rhine specialties. The proximity to the Netherlands (Roermond border approx. 30 minutes by car) is also noticeable in the visitors: many Dutch day-trippers are regular guests.
