Grand Summer Festival with Light Magic and Fireworks in the Harz Mountains
The Salt and Lights Festival originated as a summer counterpart to the Advent markets, combining the tradition of Bad Harzburg's healing brine with elaborate light design. The historic promenade around the Wandelhalle, the Gradierwerk (graduation tower), and the Badepark are staged with thousands of warm light sources. Trees, bridges, and paths are adorned with illuminated structures, and the spa park's architecture is highlighted with ground spotlights. As soon as the sun disappears behind the Harz peaks, the lighting concept unfolds its full effect.
Various bands and DJs perform across the entire festival grounds, offering programs ranging from pop, rock, and jazz to acoustic music. The culinary mile features everything from regional Harz specialties and street food classics to desserts and cocktail bars. A French market with cheese, wine, crêpes, and lavender soaps adds a Mediterranean flair, while the large Sunday flea market attracts collectors and bargain hunters.
In a dedicated area, families can enjoy carousels, bouncy castles, hands-on activities, and face painting. Workshops using salt, the town's traditional element, recall the history of brine and the Gradierwerk. Those interested can join guided tours along the spa mile to learn more about the significance of the salt landscape for Bad Harzburg's history.
The weekend's highlight is the grand fireworks display on Saturday evening, which will once again be set off at 10:22 PM in the summer of 2026. From the Badepark, the Bummelallee, and surrounding viewpoints, an impressive view of the light choreography over the town's rooftops is offered. The festival program continues late into the night afterwards.
Bad Harzburg is one of North Germany's most renowned spa towns. Its location on the edge of the Harz National Park, the cable car to the Burgberg, the treetop walk, and the brine spa attract guests year-round. The Salt and Lights Festival combines these strengths into a weekend program suitable for day-trippers as well as for a longer spa holiday in the Harz Mountains.
The 2026 program adheres to the proven structure, utilizing the entire weekend to combine light art, music, and culinary delights. Stalls in the town center will open on Saturday morning, and the full effect of the light design will begin at dusk.
Multiple stages will be spread across the festival area. Bands from Northern Germany, regional acts, and DJ sets will provide a diverse musical landscape, featuring cover pop, jazz, and acoustic sets. The exact artist lineup will be announced by the organizer in early summer 2026.
At 10:22 PM, the grand fireworks display will commence, which has been one of the most photographed moments of the summer season in Bad Harzburg for years. Afterwards, the program will continue until after midnight.
Sunday is dedicated to the flea market and the open shopping day. Shops along the Bummelallee will open in the afternoon, and the festival program will continue with family activities, walk-around acts, and a more relaxed daytime schedule.
The exact artist and hourly program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in early summer. The structure will follow the established highlights of previous years:
