Nine days of international jazz in the heart of Freiburg's city center
As the days grow shorter in mid-September, the annual Jazzfestival Freiburg begins at Jazzhaus Freiburg and other venues in the city center. From September 19th to 27th, 2026, experience nine festival days with a carefully curated program featuring international headliners, young European voices, and the rich regional jazz scene of Baden-Württemberg.
Among the artists already announced for the 2026 edition are Lambert (masked pianist with a solo program), Immortal Onion (Polish power trio), the Wolfgang Haffner Trio, Sonic Interventions, Marja Vibraphone, the Funky Marching Band, the Jazz-Trio Renner, Sorvina, and French double bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons. The final program will be published on the official website several weeks before the festival begins.
The festival traditionally kicks off with the Minigipfel — a jazz pub crawl through Freiburg's city center, where several venues host small bands simultaneously. Purchase a wristband and hop between locations as you please. Alongside the concert program, the Kommunales Kino (Municipal Cinema) in Freiburg screens a complementary jazz film program featuring documentaries and concert films.
The Jazzfestival is jointly supported by E-WERK Freiburg e.V. and Jazzhaus Freiburg. Jazzhaus, located on Schnewlinstraße, has been one of Southern Germany's most important jazz stages for decades and serves as the festival's organizational hub. The event is funded by the City of Freiburg and the State of Baden-Württemberg, with sponsors including Sparkasse Freiburg, Pianohaus Lepthien, and Brauerei Ganter.
With approximately 235,000 inhabitants, Freiburg im Breisgau is the largest city in southern Baden-Württemberg and the capital of the Freiburg administrative district. Nestled between the Black Forest and Kaiserstuhl, it is considered Germany's sunniest city and a center for tourism, wine, and culture. The university city, its Minster with the world's tallest sandstone tower, and the medieval old town with its characteristic Bächle (small water channels) provide the backdrop for the Jazzfestival. The compact city center makes it easy to walk between venues.
The 2026 edition of Jazzfestival Freiburg takes place from September 19th to 27th. Preceding the main festival days is the traditional Minigipfel on September 14th — a jazz pub crawl through the city center, considered the opening event.
The main venue is Jazzhaus on Schnewlinstraße, complemented by other city center locations. The Kommunales Kino screens an accompanying jazz film program. The festival is organized by E-WERK Freiburg e.V. and Jazzhaus Freiburg, funded by the City of Freiburg and the State of Baden-Württemberg.
Detailed setlists and performance times will be published several weeks before the festival on jazzfestival-freiburg.de.
Individual tickets for each concert and festival passes are available via jazzfestival-freiburg.de and at Jazzhaus.
By Train: ICE train to Freiburg Hbf (main station), then about a 5-minute walk to Jazzhaus. By Car: Take the A5 motorway, exit Freiburg-Mitte or -Nord, then head towards the center (parking available in underground city garages). Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport (BSL) is about 70 km away; an EuroAirport bus runs directly to Freiburg main station.
Individual tickets for each concert and festival passes are available through the official website and Jazzhaus. The final program and prices will be announced shortly before the festival begins.
Combine the festival with a day trip to the Markgräflerland wine region or to the Schauinsland mountain — the Black Forest begins right at the city's edge.
