City-wide open-air music festival with 104 bands, choirs, and ensembles on 9 stages in Freiburg's city center
Freiburg stimmt ein was launched in 2018 by the association Kultur leben e.V. and has quickly become one of the most important free open-air festivals in Southern Germany. For three days, bands, choirs, and ensembles perform on nine stages in Freiburg's city center — from Münsterplatz to Rathausplatz and Augustinerplatz. Free admission, unique atmosphere: anyone strolling through the city center will practically stumble into the next concert.
The program features 104 acts — bands, choirs, and ensembles from Freiburg and the surrounding area, as well as invited guests from all over Germany and Europe. Stylistically, the festival covers the entire spectrum: classical and choral music on the traditional squares, jazz around Augustinerplatz, pop and indie on the main stages, hip-hop and electronic music in the evenings, folk and world music during breaks. The festival explicitly aims to connect generations and social classes — children in front of the stage, students and seniors as equally present audience members.
The nine stages are spread across central squares and courtyards in Freiburg's old town. Münsterplatz, Rathausplatz, Kartoffelmarkt, Augustinerplatz, and other locations form a festival network that sets the entire city center in motion. Concerts usually start in the late morning and run until the evening; some venues even host performances at night. The free admission ensures that everyone can celebrate — over 35,000 visitors attend on a typical festival weekend.
Freiburg im Breisgau (independent city 08311, approx. 235,000 inhabitants) is the largest city in the southern Black Forest and a university city on the edge of the Upper Rhine Plain. The city is known for its medieval Minster, its "Bächle" water features in the old town, and its status as one of Germany's greenest cities. Freiburg stimmt ein is one of the city's defining summer festivals — and reflects the cultural identity of this university city: open, diverse, participatory.
For three days, from Friday, July 3rd, to Sunday, July 5th, 2026, Freiburg's city center will be one giant stage. 104 bands, choirs, and ensembles will be spread across nine open-air stages in the old town — from early afternoon classical music at Münsterplatz to a late indie show at Augustinerplatz.
The organizer is the association Kultur leben e.V., which has developed the festival since 2018 from an initiative by citizens. The idea: to make Freiburg accessible as a space of sound for all generations and social classes, with free admission and a diverse program. Over 35,000 visitors attend the main event — many stay in the city center all day, hopping from stage to stage.
