Open-air concert series in the shadow of Freiburg Minster with Sabaton, Clueso, SDP, and an electronic night
Anyone standing in the middle of Freiburg's city center knows: The Münsterplatz, with the 116-meter-high spire of Freiburg Minster, is one of the most beautiful open-air backdrops in Southern Germany. For several years now, the Münsterplatz Konzerte have been held on this very square, one of the city's most historic locations—a compact open-air series of four to six concerts in the first half of June. In 2026, the series runs from June 9 to 14 and offers the most unusual mix in its history to date.
What gives the Münsterplatz Konzerte 2026 its special appeal is the radical genre span: On Wednesday, June 10, Sabaton will be the first metal band to play on the Münsterplatz—the Swedish power metal group around Joakim Brodén brings their "Tour to End All Tours" program to Freiburg. On Thursday, June 11, Clueso arrives with his characteristic pop-songwriter set. On Friday, June 12, SDP takes over—the hip-hop pop duo from Berlin (already sold out). The highlight for the electronic scene is marked on Saturday, June 13: Marco Carola (tech-house legend from Naples), Jan Blomqvist (Berlin producer), and Nora En Pure (deep house) play an electronic marathon in front of the Minster.
In Southern Germany, Freiburg is one of the summer open-air capitals: The Zelt-Musik-Festival (ZMF) in the Mundenhof, the Italienische Nacht, the Schlossberg-Konzerte, and now the Münsterplatz Konzerte add a central city-center series characterized by maximum urban beauty. While ZMF operates with its festival tents on the outskirts of town, the Münsterplatz Konzerte bring international headliners right into the heart of the city. The city administration and the organizer Vaddi Concerts work closely together to make the UNESCO-worthy sandstone square compatible with the necessary safety and soundproofing concepts.
The sun sinks behind the Gothic pinnacles, the shop windows of the historic old town houses reflect the stage lights—the acoustic and visual impact of the Münsterplatz as a concert stage should not be underestimated. Anyone who has heard Sabaton with a full power metal wall in front of the Minster facade will not forget it quickly. The same applies to the electronic night, when the bass reflects off the sandstone walls and the Minster is bathed in colorful stage lighting. It is precisely this mix of historical beauty and contemporary pop/metal/electronic music that makes the series so charming.
Freiburg is located at the transition from the southern Black Forest to the Rhine plain—Germany's warmest city, sunniest university city, gateway to the southern Black Forest. With a good 230,000 inhabitants and a student ratio of about one-sixth, the city has a well-established cultural life. The Münsterplatz Konzerte are one of the few major events directly in the historic center—all other festivals in the city take place on the green field.
Concert dates also on June 9 and 14, details to be added shortly before the festival. Organizer is Vaddi Concerts in cooperation with the City of Freiburg.
